    Panthers release Lamar Smith

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 5, 2003 8:24 p.m. EST) - The Carolina Panthers released running back Lamar Smith on Wednesday, three months after he was placed on paid leave following his drunk driving arrest.

Smith started 11 games for the Panthers in 2002 and led the team with 737 yards rushing and seven touchdowns on 209 carries.

Smith, 32, was arrested Nov. 28 on charges of driving while impaired, speeding and reckless driving. The team placed him on paid leave the next day.

Carolina coach John Fox did not cite Smith's arrest as reason for his release.
