Worst starting QB in SB history is............

    5. Is Rex Grossman the worst starting quarterback in Super Bowl history?

Definitely not. While the disparity in reputation and past performance between Grossman and Peyton Manning may be the widest gulf between two Super Bowl starters, Grossman can’t claim the distinction of being the worst starter, no matter how you slice the statistics.

No, the worst would appear to be Miami’s David Woodley, the starter against Washington in the Super Bowl following the strike-shortened 1982 season. Woodley, who bridged the gap for the Dolphins between Bob Griese and Dan Marino, averaged just 120 passing yards a game and threw more interceptions (8) than touchdown passes (5) in that nine-game season.

By contrast, Grossman, who had a passer rating above 100 in nearly half his team’s games (7 of 16), is a superstar. Grossman’s problem is that he is rarely mediocre; he’s either very good or very bad. He had five games with a passer rating below 40.

Other than his Super Bowl year, Mark Rypien was pretty pathetic too.

Yes. There was football before 1985. Honest.

Say what you want about Grossman, the guy can earn respect with one play. When he beats you with that deep ball its devastating.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
            It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Vince Ferragamo for the Rams...he then ended up coming here right before the Kelly years.

Or Steve Grogan/Tony Eason for the 85 Pats.

Phil Simms in 86 had a terrible season prior to his magnificent performance vs the Broncos too.

Wow... a worst starting QB thread that will never have JP Losman's name pop up. Cool.

Lots worse than Doug. He came off the bench in 1987 and played great to finish the season. His SB performance was 18-29 340 yards 4TD's.

Phil Simms. The most over-rated player in NFL history. The guy was a career backup, who only played when Hoss got hurt. They are constantly making it sound like he was a hall of fame QB on CBS.

Agreed. He just rode that great defense all the way. He is quite possibly the least deserving QB to ever win a Super Bowl.
