PHILADELPHIA - Free agent visitor Derrius Thompson looks the part of a classic West Coast offense slot receiver.

Up close, Thompson appears larger than life - not to mention his dimensions on the flip card - 6-foot-3 and 216 pounds.
Right now, the 25-year-old Thompson says he'd be comfortable playing the slot for the Eagles, even though it's a non-starting position that gave Andy Reid 46 receptions last year. Thompson had 53 grabs last year with the Washington Redskins.
"You can catch a lot of balls in this offense," Thompson, who had four touchdown receptions last season, said Thursday. "The third receiver definitely can. So, the starter is not that important."

The starting position is important when it comes to money. Eagles starter James Thrash, for example, averages $1.7 million. With three other clubs in the bidding for Thompson - all offering at least a chance to compete for a starting job - the Eagles may have to get creative to land the player.

But first Thompson has another visit scheduled, one this Monday in Buffalo with the Bills, according to agent Vann McElroy. McElroy expects contract negotiations to jump out of the preliminary mode shortly thereafter.

"When Joe gets back," McElroy said of Eagles negotiator Joe Banner, who was out of town Thursday, "we'll see where we at. Until then, Derrius will look at Buffalo and we'll go from there."

He's 25, the last 6 or 7 games with the Redskins, he looked like a superstar. He's the guy we want. up and coming, still young, fast he has it all.

Hmmm...does he really fit our system?
We need a speed burner , not a WCO rcvr.

His numbers look real good. Considering the QB merry go round they had, his numbers are REALLY impressive!!

and i think he'd love to play for us, with a solid running game and Drew throwing the ball. I think he'll end up here.

I'm totally pumped to hear this. IMO he was the Skins' best WR regardless of starting status.

Living in the D.C. area I've watched him frequently. As you know I've been raving about him for months. After Darrell Jackson Boston he's the next guy I'd go for. He's a GREAT value pickup.

He's got decent speed, excellent size, but more importantly he runs great routes and gets open. Like Reed, he also catches everything thrown his way. He's a natural at finding the soft spots in the coverage which is why he'd be a great acquisition. I honestly can't believe that the Skins with their propensity for passing are letting him go w/o trying to resign him.

We'd be set at WR if we sign him!

Here's what we wrote for the WR analysis:

"Derrius Thompson, Washington, UFA, 6’2”, 216: Thompson is another decent value pickup. He is underrated and has good hands and size. He was a victim of the QB shuffle in Washington where nothing settled down all season long on offense. As a result, Thompson’s production suffered. He would be a great pickup and presumably would not cost a lot. He will be 26 next season."
