Sabres keep future free agents on hold

Management last winter instituted a policy of not negotiating extensions with soon-to-be unrestricted free agents and lost four of them to other clubs. The most notable were winger Mike Grier and defenseman Jay McKee, who signed deals for significantly higher salaries than they likely would have accepted had the Sabres re-signed him during the season.

Those departures, coupled with the sheer magnitude of what Briere and Drury provide, led many to assume the Sabres would ditch that policy this season. Not so far.

Damn you, Darcy! Don't you dare let either of them test the market! At the very least, lock up Briere long term.

      Drury first, then Briere.

IMO, Drury brings leadership, Briere brings scoring. Real leadership is harder to find. Drury should be first.
