What they are saying is that they wont sign contracts that count this year up to the cap with bonus money to go beyond the cap ammortized over the following years.

Hes simply saying that they would rather spend the money up front this year rather than ammortizing bonuses over long contracts. Its more that they arent going to work contracts that minimize this years hit while maximizing the long term hit.

I think its just sound economics that prevents major dead space hits on guys who dont pan out. It may or may not preclude signing bigger names. For example, they could sign the same 7 year 50 mill contract and choose how long to ammortize the 10 mill bonus, they could choose to put it over 2 years or all 7 years. Over 2 years, we could expect a 5+ say 2 mill hit to total 7 mill this year, thats a workable scenario with 30+ mill in cap space.

It may mean we dont sign lots of players, but a few higher priced ones. I have no problem with that.
