View Full Version : This is why I will NEVER send my kids to public school

The National Education Association is suggesting to teachers that they be careful on the first anniversary of the September 11 attacks not to "suggest any group is responsible" for the terrorist hijackings that killed more than 3,000 people.
Suggested lesson plans compiled by the NEA recommend that teachers "address the issue of blame factually," noting: "Blaming is especially difficult in terrorist situations because someone is at fault. In this country, we still believe that all people are innocent until solid, reliable evidence from our legal authorities proves otherwise."
But another of the suggested NEA lesson plans — compiled together under the title "Remember September 11" and appearing on the teachers union health information network Web site — takes a decidedly blame-America approach, urging educators to "discuss historical instances of American intolerance," so that the American public avoids "repeating terrible mistakes."
"Internment of Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbor and the backlash against Arab Americans during the Gulf War are obvious examples," the plan says. "Teachers can do lessons in class, but parents can also discuss the consequences of these events and encourage their children to suggest better choices that Americans can make this time."

Good grief!! Don't blame a certain group????
What "group" did these three ringleaders of the 9/11 attack belong to? The Girl Scouts???

These guys weren't Koreans or Aussies or Chinese.
There were 19 terrorists that hijacked 4 planes on 9/11. Funny that each was a Muslim from the Mid-East. Even more strange was the fact that a majority were from Saudi Arabia. Must be a coincidence......

How bought we teach them how to read, write and not be ignorant....
Agreed, Eb...ignorance shouldn't be on the curriculum.
Look at the poor guy in Toronto who was villified in the international media because his nephew with supposed "terrorist ties" came to visit him last summer. It got all blown out of proportion, the poor guy was accused without evidence of forging immigration documents at his copy shop & when it all came out in the wash in a Buffalo court this week, there's not enough evidence to link either this guy or his nephew to any sort of terrorist activities.

It is called being politicaly correct which is destroying this country.
Nah, it's something called the rule of law i.e. respect for laws, institutions, rulings, etc. You are supposedly innocent until proven guilty the last time I checked, but the suggestion here is that a different standard applies, based on skin colour?
Is that not one of the things we're supposedly fighting for ? If we don't respect the rule of law, we have no moral authority to impose it on others. I think the teacher's association is correct in suggesting how to approach this difficult subject.

I still can't get over the fact that RI is the only state that still celebrates VJ Day. Over 130,000 people incl children lost their lives in an instant on the first bombing alone. Many more scarred for life. Their is no justifying that. There had to be another way we could have made Japan surrender. I won't celebrate that.

What other way was that, Mybills?
It was estimated we would have lost over 250,000 American soldiers if we had used traditional invasion tactics. No telling how many Japanese would have been killed.
Food for thought... the fire bombing of Tokyo killed more people than Hiroshima or Nagasaki. Back then there were no such things as "smart bombs" (or a liberal media). Huge loss of life was to be expected in war back then.

What really puzzles me about America is that we have a mid-west but no mid or middle-east. Oh, wait a minute.. we do. It's called "Dearborn."

Southfield is predominantly African American. Dearborn has the highest per capita population of arabs in the world outside of the middle east.

If the USA did not drop those two atomic bombs (and I agree it was abhorrent, but it was neccassary), the Soviet Union would have invaded Japan.
Now, you are aware of all the wonderful things the Soviet Union did to Poland, Hungary, Romania, East Germany etc. after the war was over?
They would have sent Japan back into the stone age. As sick as it sounds, and as hard as it is for you to accept it, we did Japan a favor. Face it, there's not much on the menu when you start a world war and wind up on the losing end. Japan got her just dessert's.

Hmm.......actually we owe the Soviet Union a lot for what they did in WWII, and all we did is turn our backs on them and make them our next enemy. It's too bad FDR died when he did, it really ruined things.

interesting revisionist history. Stalin (killed more of his own citizens than Hitler) never had any intention of being a Longterm ally. The alliance was one of neccesity against a common threat, but Stalinist doctrine for a post war europe/world was still very expansionist. They hope to grab far more of europe than they actually gained.

I wonder why all of the other states STOPPED celebrating it as a holiday??? Like I said, I can't. And every time I see a documentary on it I get sick. Little kids burned from head to toe, 2 miles away from the blast, crying out for their mothers who aren't there anymore...I always have to change the channel 'cause it's heart wrenching.

MyBills I understand your horror at such scenes and the emotions that it invokes. But we must put the A-Bomb and it’s use in historical perspective. We cannot forget the atrocities committed by the Japanese by the Chinese and Koreans on a much wider scale, of far greater numbers, albeit over a longer period of time, which may make less of an emotional impact. Also that of a culture that spawned suicide air pilots, and placed children in the last line of defense. The cost of a conventional invasion would have been far more devastating to the Japanese than those two bombs, and in the loss of Allied lives. Also it must be balanced by the post-war efforts of the USA which preserved Japan, and evolved it into the Democracy and economic giant it is today. Against the back-drop of history the USA has always treated it’s vanquished foes far better than other Nations

I understand Buff, but it's still a stupid holiday, that only RI celebrates. About as stupid as making Election Day a holiday. Some hair brain spit out that idea during the Bush/Gore election.

It's a stupid holiday that was once celebrated by many states.
It's only celebrated by RI now, and it's still a stupid holiday. I wanted to know why the other states stopped celebrating it.
Nobody has answered the question though. :feedback:

Ah, ok. I can't answer the question, because I've never heard of the holiday. Nebraska must have stopped celebrating it before I was old enough to care.

Maybe the other states stopped because they knew it was a stupid holiday. Maybe RI is a stupid state for celebrating still. I don't really care either, but I am curious as to why?

So, it celebrates dropping the bomb on Japan? Ok, now I'm not confused. I agree that it shouldn't be a holiday.

If you want to talk about the government aciton in response to 9/11 that is one thing. I feel bad for this guy too. But that doesn't mean I am going to not "place blame" on anybody. Al Queda did it.
Ignorance is ignoring the truth. The truth is Al queda did it. Whether we should profile and all that other stuff is another story. But you can't ignore the fact that Al Queda did it.

Personally, unless they're doing a topic on modern history, political science, or some other related subject, I don't see why the September 11th anniversary should really be brought up in school - unless of course its simply a memorial event. The schools do a bad enough job teaching kids the three r's, last thing they need to do is to spend a day teaching them something else where a political slant of some sort is unavoidable.
