The Bills gave Bengals linebacker Takeo Spikes a contract proposal Friday and are waiting to see if he signs the offer sheet.

Barely hours after Buffalo cleared $5 million of room under the salary cap by trading franchise free-agent Peerless Price to Atlanta for a first-round pick, Bills President Tom Donahoe confirmed he had given Spikes a proposed deal.

I imagine Takeo will sign it. The real hurdle is if Cincy will match it.

I can't imagine Takeo would come up here and not sign it...In addition to that, TD waited till after the Price deal. Me thinks he wanted the extra dough.

WNSA is now reporting this too (from the Bengals web site)...

Cincy will have a hard time signing it...they have made an offer to Kevin Hardy and want Thornton...they don't have that much money under the cap to afford all these guys.

IF TD put a $4.5-$5.5 million cap value on him for 2003 he will be ours!!

Another negotiating ploy?

Perhaps he floated a proposal that he thinks Takeo will sign simply to get out of Cincy.

Cincy then realizes that they have enough to match and do. Meanwhile, we lowballed him.

Then, since Takeo doesn't want to be in Cincy, he makes a stink, and then we offer to trade to Cincy a pick, 2nd, 3rd, combo.

We get Spikes w/o breaking the bank, Spikes is happy simply to be out of Cincy after a short-term scare. We keep our first.

Thoughts?

Simon is reporting on WNSA that Spikes and France were praying that the Bills would give Spikes an offer sheet, so I imagine he'll be signing it.

It's strange that Donohoe would be quoted on a Bengal site about the offer sheet, and not talk to WNSA about it?? What do you make of that?

That the Bengals media is following Spikes closer than us...?

Mike Schopp from WGR55 just said that it sounds like Cincy will not match and there's a small chance that they might decline to match today, so they can work their time on the other free agents. Apparently, LB Kevin Hardy is strongly considering the offer with the Bengals. :D
