Background

Levi Brown attended Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia where he played both offense and defense on the football team. Brown had a monster year as a junior, recording 102 tackles on the season. As a senior he totaled 6 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 22 tackles for loss, helping his team to an 8-2 record. He was named second team all-state for his play on both offense and defense. Levi was selected to play in the U.S. Army all-American game following his senior season. He was considered to be one of the top 50 defensive prospects in the nation and accepted a scholarship to Penn State where he sat out and took a redshirt in 2002. He shifted from defensive tackle to offensive tackle during spring practices in 2003. Levi went on to start all 12 games at left tackle as a redshirt freshman. As a sophomore, Brown started 10 games (9 at left tackle, 1 at right tackle), missing the Purdue contest due to a sprained knee he suffered the previous week. As a junior, Brown developed into one of the better offensive tackles in the nation, starting every game at left tackle. He was named first team all-Big Ten for his play as a junior. Brown graduated in 3 ½ years with a degree in Labor and Industrial Relations, but returned as a graduate student his senior season.

Analysis

Levi Brown has a ton of experience, having started the past four seasons at left tackle after converting from defensive tackle at Penn State. He is a person with an outstanding work ethic and no character issues. Levi has probably the best combination of size and strength of all the offensive tackles available this year and he has the mean streak you like to see in an offensive lineman. He has long arms which allow him to keep defenders away from his body in pass protection. He is very strong at the point of attack and can be a dominating force as a run blocker. He has the ability to get to the second level and take out a linebacker in the running game. He gets good leverage on his opponents and does a good job of finishing his blocks. Brown is a better run blocker than he is a pass blocker. He lacks the athleticism and quick feet to be a superior pass protector. He isn’t as polished as some of the other tackle prospects and needs to refine his technique. His lack of athleticism will cause problems for him against speed rushers at the next level. Brown could project at multiple positions in the NFL. His natural position is left tackle but with his lack of ideal athleticism and quick feet for the position, he would most likely be a better fit at right tackle. He could also slide inside and play guard if needed. Levi Brown is one of the best offensive linemen available in the 2007 NFL draft and should be a first round pick on draft day.

Why? Were set at OT. We need some OG's.

1) Good Character

2) Penn State guy

3) Need an OL, could play RT or even RG

4) Mean Streak on the field

This just seems a lot more likely when you start factoring everything together.

2) Penn State guy

What the hell does that have to do with anything?

Character? I don't know.

wouldnt mind him but I dont think they will take him.. Also dont think he'll be around at 12 (houston or miami)

I dont doubt his ability, i just think we have bigger priorities.

It wouldn't surprise me.

I wouldn't take a tackle at this point, unless I was dead-ass confident he was going to be an immediate starter. But then again, I'm not a GM.

Funny thing is that I don't see another guy at #12 that will address a bigger need than our OL.

A starting Guard can be had in Round 2 or 3.

I'm thinking DL in Round 1.

We'll see.

I don't think Buffalo will pick him. #12 is too high to take a guard, and Buffalo loves Jason Peters at LT. I think they believe Pennington/Butler will be fine at RT.

I would love the pick, was the anchor the Penn States line. Hes gonna be a good lineman in the NFL

Theres no way we even think about o-line in the 1st 4 rounds!

Well while none of us can predict who will be available where in round 1, MLB/DE both are higher priorities imo then OT.

We'll see.Brown is a LT and his stock seems to be soaring right now. There is even talk that he might not be there when we pick at 9.

He'd be a good pick for your team.

Good pick...but will likely be gone at 12 .. Reuben Brown was a former LT at Pitt who was taken at 13 to play OG....

When you examine all our major and immediate needs (DE, OG, MLB, CB). IMO our defense depends upon good DEs, were almost certainly losing Kelsay, therefore I see us taking either Anderson or Adams. The reason I say this is because you can get away with playing cover 2 with mediocre CBs, and smallish LBs, but you cant do it without two stud DEs. And seeing as how were most likely not going to be able to afford a bigtime DE in FA, looks like the draft will be where we get one. Then again.... this is a really good year for DEs and maybe they see one that they can take in the 2nd round.

I think the pick should go to Patrick Willis.

I have a feeling he'll be there at 12.

I'm more disposed towards using #12 on DL or LB, but like you I wouldn't mind it if we picked him up. Marv has said on numerous occasions that they've identified OL as their #1 priority this offseason, so I wouldn't be shocked.

To me it all depends on what potential they see in Pennington/Butler at RT. If that position's OK, I'd rather see us grab a solid RG in FA, maybe another in Rd 3-4, and spend our #12 pick on Carriker, Okoye, Willis, or someone else to aid our run D.

If Brown is a Levi Jones tackle, I'd have no problem with having our Bengal-style Willie Anderson/Levi Jones tackle combo for the future..

If one of the four d-lineman fall to #12 {Anderson,Adams, Branch, Okoye} then that should be the pick. Go mlb in rd. 2, and o-guard in rd. 3.
Day two you pick up the d-back needed, another rb, another lb.

I don't agree, what logic is it to ignore our most pressing need in the draft. I guess i'll have to wait till fa, but im not holding my breath they'll upgrade with a quality free agent.

enough of the DT talk, we have 2 rookie DT's that when Kyle puts on some pounds, and McCargo gets back in the fray, we're gonna be ok there, get a young FA in there and we'll be good. We need a DE and a MLB

Who's replacing Tim Anderson who started most of the season?
