Great read.. If there is one thing about marv i do still trust, is he won't put too much stock into numbers at the combine, and he'll find real "football players"

It might be over hyped but it is necessary.

I like the attitude of Thomas and Harris:

Thomas -

"I see a lot of guys who do that," said Thomas, who stayed in Madison to prepare for the combine. "They lose focus on what they're doing in the offseason, which is preparing for an NFL season, as opposed to training to run a fast 40 time."

Harris -

One reporter eyed Notre Dame offensive tackle Ryan Harris (6-4½, 305) skeptically and wondered whether he was big enough to be an NFL tackle. I loved Harris' answer.

"I can't say anything about that," Harris said. "I am my height, and I am my current weight. I think there's a lot to be said for how you play as opposed to how you look."

I don't understand why more GMs don't think this way.

The combine itself isnt overhyped. It is what it is. They do exactly what they are supposed to there.

Now the idiots who make a 7th round talent into a 1st because he runs really fast.......well yeah you get the idea.

I like getting the official weights, heights, 40's, and verticals.

Most media guides fudge numbers, and I like knowing for sure, what I got in a player in his rawest form. But I dont think the combine makes or breaks most players.

there's somethin to say about players who don't have big contracts handed to them left and right, but the players who have to bust their butt and have something to prove not only to themselves, but the entire NFL. THOSE are the players that will sacrifice themselves for that tick in the W column.

The combine has always been overhyped. It's beyond absurd to judge a kid's NFL career from a few drills one weekend that bear little resemblance to actual play.
