(WGR 550) - The Buffalo Sabres have sent goaltender Martin Biron to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for an undisclosed pick, and sent a fifth-round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for netminder Ty Conklin.

Biron was 12-4-1 for Buffalo in 2006-07, posting a 3.04 goals against average. His hit to the salary cap is $2.2 million, as opposed to Conklin's, whose hit is $525,000.

Conklin was 2-3-2 with a 3.23 goals against average this season, but played for the Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers in 2005-06. For his career, Conklin is 29-22-4-3, with a 2.60 goals against average and .901 save percentage.

The move frees up $1.675 million.

Keep it locked at WGR Sports Radio 550 for any and all updates.

Conklin makes $525,000, so we've cleared about about $1.6 million. Add Gaustad and Connolly, and we've gotta have over $5 million available. (although I'm not sure what Connolly's status is as of yesterday)

(WGR 550) - The Buffalo Sabres have sent goaltender Martin Biron to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a second-round pick, and sent a fifth-round pick to Columbus for netminder Ty Conklin.

Biron was 12-4-1 for Buffalo in 2006-07, posting a 3.04 goals against average. His hit to the salary cap is $2.2 million, as opposed to Conklin's, whose hit is $525,000.

Yeah, If we didn't trade him, we'd get nothing for him, now we free up 2.2 Million in cap space, and get draft picks for him. Sabres Also Sent a Pick and Brought in Ty Conklin from Columbus, And My Sources Say they aren't finished.

This is from the Sabres blogger at hockeybuzz.com ... sounds like pure speculation, but I'll post it:

Two teams to focus on:

Colorado and Florida have been scouting Buffalo for months...

John Michael Liles and Milan Hejduk look very tasty right now.

Liles and Ryan Miller are fellow Spartans and they are very close off the ice.

Don't rule out Joe Sakic. He may be leaving Colorado for a contender as well. Colorado management will honour his request if he's adamant. Drury and Sakic know one another well.

How in teh world would Buffalo be able to afford Sakic? And how could Colorado even CONSIDER trading him without causeing a mass phone call from every Avs fan in the world. But he is UFA....

Hejduk is affordable and has 3 years left on his deal.... and is young still.... Not happenin.

Like I said, we can be about $5 million under the cap right now, depending on Connolly's status. Sakic will be a UFA, the Avs are pretty much out of the playoff race. Speaking of the Avs, they picked up Ray Bourque for a Cup, and that was equally unthinkable at the time.

Mikey, I don't think you are suppose to quote yourself. Actually I think this is a stupid trade for the Islanders. Robert Nilsson and O'Mara can be a very good players, and a 1st round pick for someone that will be walking at the end of the season is a hefty price for the Islanders. I think Nilsson and O'Mara were two of the top prospects in their system.
