Steelers DE Smith Now Highest Paid Steeler In Team History

Steelers signed defensive end Aaron Smith to a four-year contract extension. Profootballtalk.com reports the deal will pay Smith roughly $25 million and $12.5 million over the next two seasons, making him the highest-paid Steeler in team history.
The deal takes Smith, who was previously under contract for $4.5 million in 2007, through the 2011 campaign. Despite new head coach Mike Tomlin bringing the 4-3 to Pittsburgh, Smith will remain valuable because he has the ability to play inside. One of the more underrated players in the NFL, Smith had 4.5 sacks and 64 tackles last year. Feb. 27 - 4:49 pm et

Like I said before. With the cap going up guys are going to get paid ALOT MORE. The Kelsay deal is nothing compared to the deals that are coming.

this is the kind of stuff that should scare the **** out of Bills fans. Players' contracts are increasing at a rate that's much faster than inflation and the Bills' ability to generate revenue.

...and therefore Kelsey's contract scares me. it's not that I think we grossly overpaid him, its that a whole lot of guys are going to start getting grossly overpaid. I have a very bad feeling that by the end of free agency, Kelsey's contract is going to look like a vet minimum. I wonder how many stars we see holding out this spring when their understudies are getting paid more than they are.

Hampton is a NT. Smith is one of the best 3-4 ends in the NFL and has been for years. Kelsay isn't close to the top 4-3 DE, he doesn't even play full-time.

Smith will receive $12.5M in the first 2 years of that contract, but he was scheduled to be paid $4.5M this year anyway. That isn't overpaying, that is smart, with $8M in new money in the first 2 years of the contract. Kelsay is guaranteed $14.5M, and will probably earn more over the first 2 years when salaries are factored in.

Kelsay doesn't even play full time and yet he managed to put up better numbers that Smith did in 06' :

                      Smith - 64 Tackles 4.5 Sacks

                      Kelsay - 88 Tackles 5.5 Sacks

I realize that they play in different schemes, so their responsabilities may be a bit different, but at the end of the day football is football. The highest sack total for Smith during his career is 8. Considering that Kelsay had 5.5 last year, while playing in a new system, I don't think it's that far out of reach for Kelsay to post 8 sacks or more this coming year. Kelsay's contract may be a little high, but not nearly as bad as some of you make it out to be. I think some people are going to be surprised to see the money that will get thrown at players they consider to be average. With the cap increasing each year, the salaries are going to jump at the same rate if not faster.

Say what you want. The Nose Guard is always the most important person in a 3-4. Don't have a good Nose? You will suck ass, and Casey Hampton and Jammal Williams are far and away the best the league has to offer.

smith is not a probowl player.. he doesnt put up scary numbers.. screw that whole "smith is way better than kelsay" crap.

kelsay got a fair market deal.

Smith is a hell of a player. As a 3-4 end, his primary job is to tie up blockers and let the LB make plays. Despite that, he has twice had 8 sacks and more often than not had his share of tackles. If is one of the best 3-4 DE in the NFL and one of the best DL in the NFL. He is a big reason why Pittsburgh has had one of the NFL's best defenses during his career.

BTW, he has made the Pro Bowl (2004), and he is a much better player than Kelsay despite the fact he received far less guaranteed money.
