The magic number is 18 points

Any combination of Buffalo earning 18 points and Toronto not earning points 18 points and the Sabres clinch a playoff berth.

Something tells me that's not going to happen by the 3/10 date I chose to win some ZBs...

How did you get 18? Looks like we have a 20 point lead on them (plus a game in hand).

Of the teams currently out of the playoffs Toronto can accumulate the most points if they were to win ALL of their games - 105. For them to be the 9th team in the league (which would have to happen for the Sabres to clinch) the Sabres would have to get to 105 to clinch. Hence, 18 points.

Re: The magic number is 18 points

Buffalo now has 91 points and needs 14 points to get to 105.

The magic number is 14 points. Any combination of 7 Sabres regulation wins and 7 Maple Leaf regulation losses and the Sabres clinch a playoff spot.

Remember that this number can move depending on the team that could finish in 9th. IF Toronto went on a run and another team slipped the magic number would be calculated on that other team.

91 points gets you a playoff spot normally, so I think we can do more.

Down to just 10 points now! Toronto and the Rangers both have a maxium of 103 points, and the Sabres are now at 93. Theoretically, I could come close on that pool with my March 10th guess, if we win our next 3 games and the Rangers and Leafs each lose a few times!

I think Boston is still in on that too...they could, in theory, get to 103.

After tonights action the Sabres magic number is still 10 points. The target has changed a little though. Toronto has moved into the 8th spot which means the best that one of the other teams can do is 103 points - the Rangers.

that is incorrect. the first tie break is wins...the Rangers and Boston can finish with no more than 48...Should they win out the Sabres would win with 103 points because they would have 49 wins.

Yeah but Buffalo could get to 103 pts other than getting to 49 wins (OT losses).
