Steelers Notebook: Davenport agrees to 2-year deal
Friday, March 02, 2007

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-gazette

The Steelers signed backup running back Najeh Davenport to a two-year, $2 million contract yesterday, paying him the kind of money that should put him high in their plans for next season.

Davenport, who would have become an unrestricted free agent, received a $405,000 signing bonus, a salary of $595,000 this year and $1 million next year. He is entering his sixth season in the NFL.

The Steelers signed Davenport to a one-year contract after their first game last season when Green Bay released him. He eventually became their backup to starter Willie Parker after Verron Haynes was injured at midseason. New coach Mike Tomlin has stated a preference for using two running backs, something that is becoming a trend in the NFL.

Davenport, 6 feet 1 and 247 pounds, gained 221 yards on 60 carries last season and also returned kickoffs.

"As long as the physical checks out we'll sign him today," coach Jack Del Rio said.
Pashos will be installed as the team's starting right tackle.

Daniel Grahams to Broncos

ESPN Radio reports that the Broncos have agreed to a deal with Daniel Graham on a deal that includes a $10 million signing bonus.
Mike Shanahan has been looking for a quality starting tight end who can block for a long time. Denver uses two tight ends sets extensively and Tony Scheffler will still be a big part of the passing game, but Graham could get on the field more in the red zone because of his blocking. His fantasy potential goes up, but don't expect Graham to be a TE1.

A powerful run-blocker with the ability to pick up the blitz, FB Ovie Mughelli was signed by the Falcons during the first day of the NFL's free agent period on Friday.

Mughelli (6-1, 255 pounds), a second-team All-Pro by the Associated Press this past season, was an unrestricted free agent who had spent his first four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens after the club selected him in the fourth round (134th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft. Terms of his contract were not disclosed.

The Boston Herald reports that the Patriots have agreed to terms with DE/LB Adalius Thomas. He still has to pass a physical Saturday.
The Patriots last made a big free agent splash with Rosevelt Colvin, another edge rusher. New England may be the one team who can utilize Thomas' various skills even more creatively than Baltimore. The 29-year-old will give the Patriots more options with their multiple formations and bolsters weak spot on the defense. Mike Vrabel could play inside more often now. Mar. 2 - 8:01 pm et

2 Yrs/$5.3M, $2M SB. Typical Pats veteran signing.

The Brady signing likely means Dan Graham is moving on. Too bad, I really liked the guy and wish him well.

Word around here is that ex-Bill Sammy Morris, who was in for a visit today, may be signed soon as well. Plus, the Pats are rumored to be looking at a free agent WR, although nobody is sure which one.

I kept an ESPN article table about top 30 FAs and went back to see how many were available at this point in Free Agency - 8 of the top 30 FAs as defined by ESPN are still available. They had a number of mistakes in list which I corrected including listiing Drew Bennett as a Bill and I added their new team.
