Steelers released LB Joey Porter.
Classic lede by Ed Bouchette: "The Steelers today released linebacker Joey Porter, their best overall defensive player in the 21st century whose play helped win them a Super Bowl 13 months ago." We can't argue, but Porter wasn't particularly good in 2006, complained about his contract, and was due $5 million this year. He also may not fit in Mike Tomlin's defense, which will segue to more 4-3 and Tampa 2 schemes.

Where he talks about Dallas saying they were going to draft him and took his family to dinner and bought them cell phones and gave them gear. He then says thank god they didn't draft me, that's why I'm a Steeler now.

It's a slap in the face to the Cowboys so I love it.

Ah, never saw it. But as an avid Steeler hater, I love this move. Can't stand Porter.

I agree but living in Dallas I hate the Cowboys even more.

As much as he opens his dumb mouth I'm sure everyone is getting a kick out of it.

More Steeler News

James Harrison will take over for Joey Porter at outside linebacker.
"The Wildebeast" gets his chance. Harrison, 28, signed a cap-friendly deal last offseason and makes much more financial sense than Porter.

According to NFL Live they want to cut him (much like Jamal Lewis and Joe Horn) and re-sign him to a lower number but he's such a hot head that he won't go back because he's insulted by being cut.

After two weeks of internal debate, the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to cut ties with one of their most recognized players -- linebacker Joey Porter.

Porter and running back Verron Haynes were released Thursday as the Steelers got under the salary cap. But the decision to release Porter wasn't as much a cap move as it was a change in direction. A three-time Pro Bowl performer, Porter turns 30 on March 22. And with new coach Mike Tomlin taking over for Bill Cowher, the Steelers were looking to go in a different direction with their linebacking corps.

Porter is one of the league's most outspoken players and is willing to verbally challenge opponents. His approach at time did not mesh well with the Steelers' image.

lol! The Bengals are interested in him.

The "early buzz in league circles" is that free agent Joey Porter will be pursued by the Cardinals and Bengals.
Porter knows much of the coaching staff in Arizona, but the Cards run a 4-3 defense. The Bengals also are dedicated to the 4-3 front and just released veteran LB Brian Simmons to clear cap space. We'd think the Jets and New England are more likely landing spots for Porter.

it seems like Miami is another team with interest in Porter:

Agent Jeffrey Sperbeck said early Friday morning that the Dolphins have expressed interest in signing former Pittsburgh linebacker Joey Porter, who was released Thursday by the Steelers on the eve of the NFL's free-agent signing period.
