So lets talk about some things after today.
I think one thing is clear, size was key for us. Why? we may have signed Dockery for about what Steinbach got.The difference between the two is size, among other things.
So ask yourself, why size? Well, I think we saw how potent the long ball could be on this team with Losman to Evans last year. I think we feel Evans is a long ball guy, hes not a possession type. He can catch it short, but his size limits his ability to fight for the ball. I think we see that hes a guy who beats guys and then scores. Signing Steinbach may make us better, yes it probably would have. But there is a risk that he could become overpowered at times. Dockery, on the other hand, is the same size as most of your bigger DL. I think Fairchild sees that JP needs that extra time to take advantage of our strength in the pass game which is the long ball.
On run, I think we would have been fine with either Steinbach or Dockery. Honestly, its a push to me, both can block well.
Walker at the very least is an upgrade at RG, RT? well I dont see why they would do this considering Pennington has looked decent. I think he may very well go to RG. Again, the size matters.
Overall, you look at a team that has an X-Ram Coach in Fairchild and you think about Pace, and Barron an you can see a similarity in plans. Bulger is a pocket passer and has done well when he had big guys in front of him. I think Fairchild wanted size to buy JP the extra time to take even more advantage of Evans deep. I also think we will get even more players on O who will stretch the field deep.
I think the thought was that guys like Dockery and Walker can take on more than one rusher with their size. That means that they dont necessarily need FB's or TE's that are blockers. Maybe they can get those passing or even running options like a Greg Olsen or Brian Leonhard because they have OG's that can handle more than one rusher.
Weve all heard that it all starts with the lines, I just think that upgrading the physical talent at OG was the LEAST of our gain today. I think the tangible benefit that a team with a big line has is its options in the pass and run when you dont have to commit a RB or FB or even TE to cover the extra rushers.
I can see us building a SB Rams type offense at this point. If we can just prevent a major purge on the defense talent wise, we are headed to good places.
