Clements Exit Could Mean Big Things For Youboty

    I like this:

"When we drafted him we liked what we saw," said Catavolos. "Physically I don't see a minus on him. He has an excellent work ethic and intelligence. The biggest thing discussed by our staff when we talk about him is just getting him the amount of playing time that he needs to get him ready for the season."

Clements Exit Could Mean Big Things For Youboty

He was the biggest unknown quantity on Buffalo's roster last season. Rookie Ashton Youboty was a player the Bills coaching staff liked a lot based on what they saw of his college tape. But after missing all but three days of the spring camps, a week of training camp with a hamstring injury and the entire preseason, the staff didn't know what Youboty could give them in an NFL regular season game.

"Basically he missed six weeks of work," said Bills secondary coach George Catavolos.

The late final exam schedule at Ohio State along with the passing of his mother left Youboty on an island forced to study the playbook on his own away from the rest of his teammates. As a result he was inactive for the first nine games and didn't play until Week 14 against the Jets, which proved to be his only action on defense.

"He contributed late in the season in the second Jets game and played well," said Catavolos. "But because of his mother's passing he was behind."

Since the end of Youboty's rookie campaign things have changed. Starting right cornerback Nate Clements signed a landmark deal with San Francisco in free agency and nickel corner Kiwaukee Thomas is a free agent as well. But the even-keeled Youboty is approaching his first NFL offseason no differently than any other in his career.

"It feels the same as when I first got here," Youboty said as to whether he has a great opportunity to start. "I always felt as though I had an opportunity. I just have to continue going out there and working hard and then let the coaches make that decision."

And Youboty is supremely motivated. A natural competitor, the second-year corner found not playing games last season very difficult. He's looking forward to action even if it's in just helmets and shorts in the OTAs.

I know there were a lot of extenuating circumstances for the kid last year, but I really wish he had gotten a bit more playing time down the stretch.

Should be interesting to see what we do at CB to create competition there.

He's got, talent, intelligence and great work ethic. How much lack of experience will affect his positive factors will depend on how good our coaches are in putting him insituations to develop and succeed right away.

we shall see. He's hungry ,that's for sure.

It would be great if our replacement for Clements was already on the team.

maybe he already is but the coaches are just waiting for him to prove it.

I really hope he's on the right track because I'd hate to waste our first pick on a CB

I really loved the Youboty pick when it happened and expected him to eventually replace Clements, but now I'm worried. He got virtually no experience last year, and now we're just throwing him right in there, possibly. Hopefully it turns out for the best.

There were actually mocks of him going at 16 (IN THE 1st) to the Dolphins, so you know he has all the physical tools, and after last season, and a full offseason we should see an improvment.

I think he's in line to start if we dont sign a better Fa, because I really dont think (nor hope) we are drafting a CB in round 1 or 2 of the draft.

I want to draft a CB like Chris Houston to eventually replace McGee, who I think will continue to struggle this year like last year.

Wasn't Chris Houston quoted as saying he didn't want to play in a cover system and wanted to play man to man? I don't think he'd be happy in Buffalo. Besides, his combine workout has moved him up and he will likely be a late 1st rd/early 2nd rd pick.

I saw that interview but he said he preferred a man up system, and we play a Cover 2 which we can tweak if we had the right personell to let the CB's man up. His combine may propel him but I dont know if its all the way to the 1st round, that is a little high imo.

The Answer is concerned that we have a false sense of security regarding Youboty - Don't get The Answer wrong, he hopes that this kid is a player and can emerge as a quality starter - but right now he's still raw and we already have Toast Mcgee to worry about.

We are going to need a veteran in here to hold things down until Youboty is ready, if he ever is.

Remember - 2 pieces of toast always don't add up to a healthy breakfast.
