I come alone and in peace. Nightly.
I'm here to just throw out my thoughts on the McGahee trade.
I think you made out like bandits. Willis McGahee was the biggest hype machine I have seen outside of Warren Sapp in his later years. This is a RB who has averaged 1,000 yards a season for three years. If you factor in his "NFL redshirt," he's at 750.
But as Willis will tell you, he's the best back in the NFL. But he doesn't block. And not only is he not great at it, but he just doesn't do it. And he doesn't catch out of the backfield. No, he's pretty much a pure running back. A guy who will get you 5 a pop?
No. Actually, around 3.9 a pop (average). That's good for close to league worst.
I'd list the RBs who performed better, but it's pretty much everyone. Suffice it to say that Thomas Jones, Ladell Betts, and Travis Henry are on the list.
It was a mistake to draft him. RBs are a dime a dozen. In fact, drafting a RB in the top half of the first is just a bad idea. They become available on the FA market every year. Every year, a top back's available, and if you consider the trade opportunities, you could restock every 3 years with fresh legs. RBs are injury risks, they wear down quickly, and they don't always pan out. When you add on top of that the fact McGahee was ALREADY damaged goods, and that he would require a redshirt season, and that he had an ego that put him on his own pedestal, and that he'd spend a guaranteed quarter (could always be more) of his rookie contract on the pine... you got trigger-happy. Right now, there are only 3-4 RBs in the NFL I'd pay a first for: LT, LJ, Gore, and MAYBE Reggie Bush.
As for McGahee? No breakaway ability, no blocking, no catching, at 1,000 a year. With an attitude problem, an inflated sense of self, and an expiring contract.
If you ask me, what you got was a steal. I would have shaken hands, wiped my brow, and cracked a smile: you got 'em.
(That said, it would have been better to trade him earlier... you could have had Thomas Jones--a better back--for just one of those 3rds).
