(March 10, 2007) — Hockey fans will have a team in Rochester's arena to cheer next season — even if the AHL's Americans aren't playing, Mayor Robert Duffy said Friday.
"We are not going to let the arena go dark," he said. "We are going to have sports and hockey in there."
Amerks President Steve Donner, who also runs the Knighthawks indoor lacrosse franchise, has said that the teams won't play next year unless they get more money, possibly through a share of concession revenue inside Blue Cross Arena at the Community War Memorial. Their 10-year contract with arena manager SMG expires in June. However, SMG's contract with the city, which owns the arena, doesn't expire until June 2008.
If the Amerks don't play and another team replaces them, that team would have to be from a lower hockey league. Under American Hockey League bylaws, a suspended franchise maintains territorial rights. So far, however, city officials say they are working solely with Donner and want both teams to remain.
