    Are third-string QBs going extinct?

Being a backup QB can be frustrating at times, but the job pays well and has many built-in benefits, writes Matt Mosley.

"If you have a pocket quarterback, there's not as much reason to carry three," he said. "It's the guys who run around all the time who get hurt."

Wright said the best backups are the ones who have a clear understanding of their roles.
"First, you have to provide assistance to the starter during the game," he said. "And second, you have to be mentally disciplined enough to prepare like you're going to start every week. When I hear some guys say they weren't ready, it just kills me."

Does the name Billy Joe Hobert ring a bell?

When I think of backup QBs I think of Alex Van Pelt and Frank Reich - both were better than starter at analyzing opponent and would provide valuable input to starter and the latter could take over in a pimch.

What about the 3rd stringers and the practice squad they need someone to feed them the ball.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
    It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Gail Gilbert played in 5 straight Super Bowls ... as a 3rd QB ... gotta love it
