Bowling sales of Canda
the History article
"Modern ten pin took its first steps in monasteries of 300 A.D. Germany and grew from superstition of the day. It was customary for peasants of the period to carry kegels, big bottle shaped clubs, at all times. In efforts to encourage church going and fight evil, monastery monks invented a church ceremony in which attending parishioners were told that their kegels represented evil. To prove their devotion to God, peasants placed their kegel at on end of a long hallway, and from the opposite end they had to try and knock over the kegel via a rolling stone. Success meant absolution of sin; a miss was ground for repentance. In time, the monks started participating in the ceremony and it was not long before kegels were added and the game of Kegeling was fashioned."
