I am going to attempt to watch my first ever hockey game next time I can find one in HD. Can anyone give me the basics of hockey (i.e. what to watch for, what the freak those lines on the ice mean)

Who are the good teams in the NHL, players, MVP's and so on.

Try to compare things to the NFL as much as possible (dummy it down if you will so I can understand)

Trust HBF, he's Canadian, thus giving him infinite hockey wisdom from birth! I'm jealous deep down inside.

The team that scores the most points wins.

NO, I've never seen a second of hockey in my life and I figured since you all talk about it so much I would give it a shot.

You may not like what you see on TV right away, but if you attend a game in person you willbe converted for life.

My friend just told me about a guy named Iginla, he is apparently the meanest, hardest hitting guy in the NHL. I would love to watch this guy play.

It's funny, he was drafted by the Dallas Stars but then got traded to Calgary.
I wouldn't say he's the meanest, hard-hitting player around but he is definitely a very good player.

So who would you say is? I know a few years ago they did a segment on a black player who played for, I want to say the Oilers and that he was a beast.

of all the sports...hockey is most like war. The players have weapons they use to fight over the puck. after you watch hockey for a while you really start to pick up on all the little battle going on. There is no comparison to the NFL really. There is constant transition and it gets very intense. hockey rules.

Is there any strategy involved like football? Watching it there doesn't seem to be much involved.

I'm with you on this one - get to a live game. Live sports are alwaays better than watching the TV.

the two sports are very different. Football is a sprint while hockey is a marathon. The only real similarity is both are about positioning and where people are moving. Hockey might seem like they are just skating around but all of those players have a place they should be and are trying to get there.

He is a very good all-around player.
Can score goals and points but also won't back down from a fight.

Here was his 52 goal season a couple of years ago:

Here's a few fights he has got into:
