When they could not be caught by anybody merely on points? - 3/16
When they could not be cuaght by anybody based on the outcomes of all games? - 3/17

Didn't Atlanta win 4-3 in OT?

Keith Tkachuk (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/558/)'s power-play goal with 38 seconds left in overtime gave Atlanta a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/buf/) on Sunday and extended the Thrashers' home winning streak to seven.

Atlanta has 88 points and leads Tampa Bay by six in the Southeast Division. The Lightning lost 7-1 at Washington. Buffalo, the best team in the Eastern Conference, had won two straight. It clinched a playoff spot following Toronto's shootout loss to Montreal on Saturday.

If you answer the 17th, you are answering "When the specific teams that cannot catch them are known".

If you answer the 18th, you are answering "When the NHL finally clued in".

When they could not be caught by anybody merely on points? -
When they could not be caught by anybody based on the outcomes of all games?

Therefore, the better question is when couldn't they make the playoff before all the events happened friday March 16th? The answer is nothing could happen to prevent them from making the playoffs as of Friday March 16th. If you could do nothing to lose a playoff spot, you made the playoffs that instant.

The double playoffs with a twist was the funniest thing I read on here in months, cher.

If you win the lottery & have $10 Million dollars after taxes and misc. deductions being wired to you april 8th and your going to get that $10 Million dollars wired no matter what you do on april 8th, when did you become a Millionaire? The moment the numbers we're drawn and you already had done your part and owned the ticket or april 8th?

You see in every deal, if you cannot change the outcome it's the final result. When the numbers are drawn on a certain day, like a lottery for example you either won or lost it that instant it happened. The Sabres didn't have to cash a ticket or get challenged by someone else after Friday the 16th games ended to make the playoffs, their ticket was punched without recourse.

I brought up the lottery scenario simply because if you watch TV and your numbers get drawn and you are holding the only ticket to a multi-million dollar lottery you certainly are not going to say well until I get the money in the bank it's not real. You party, jump up and down and scream I am a multi-millionaire.

One other thing, it's a sad day when a person calling themselves a Sabres fan sees them be the first team to make the playoffs and can't even acknowledge the fact that they are happy for their team.

After the game Friday the 6) Carolina Hurricanes could match Buffalo's 98 points, but could not mathematically catch Buffalo's 46 wins, which are the first tiebreaker.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers could both gain 99 points. However, the two teams play each other on April 1st. Even assuming an OTL, the loser of that game could only gain 98 points. Since neither team could get 46 wins, even if they won their remaining games, the Sabres have the tiebreaker of the loser.

Therefore it was mathematically impossible for Buffalo to miss the postseason as of Friday night. Even if the Sabres forfeited the rest of their games and the worst possible outcome occured for the rest, we would have made the playoffs.

So whoever said Friday night is correct.

the Sabres can celebrate the fact they've clinched a playoff spot. With the win Friday night over the Tampa Bay Lightning, Buffalo can finish no lower than eighth in the Eastern conference. That means they've clinched a playoff spot.

Lets just say that the Sabres lose all the rest of their games in regulation (no points awarded). Carolina has 9 games left and if they won all of them would have 98 points, so not enough. NY rangers have 10 games left and could tie us but we would have more games won by 1 more game, so no go for them. The NY Islanders could make 100 points and pass us by winning all their remaining games and that would make us the eighth seed because toronto's max points is 98 with 10 games left and Montreal can only get 96 points with what they have left.

The real gist is the Sabres actually made the playoffs on friday March 16th because when they won, toronto & the NYR play each other and one team could only collect a maximum of one point with the other earning 2 during that game. That left the Sabres a lock for a worse case eighth place finish after all the games are played.

sabres havent clinched......... islanders have 1 game in hand, and if they win out could overtake buffalo.......... so technically the contest is still going

the magic # for buffalo is still 1 against the isles, and any combo of points works.... so loss/otl or a buffalo otl/win helps

so until one of those two happens, there is still that minute chance NYI can overtake buffalo only on points, but no other tiebreakers

the NHL has said they do not consider tie breakers when placing that X...which is why we don't have one next to our name despite the fact that it's impossible we don't make the playoffs. we have already clinched despite the lack of an X at nhl.com.

The most the islanders can earn is 20 points..giving them 99. We have 99. They would then have 44 wins.. we have 46 thus winning the tie-breaker.
