PORTER, JONES IN BRAWL

Per numerous media reports, including the Las Vegas Review-Journal, newly-signed Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter was cited for misdemeanor battery on Sunday night after allegedly punching Bengals left tackle Levi Jones in the face.

The altercation started at a gaming table at the Palms casino.

Per an e-mail from a reader who claims to have witnessed the incident, "They started talking sh-t, Joey Porter saying he'll always be a Steeler. He showed off the Super Bowl ring and Jones got up to him, and Joey Porter pretty much kicked his ass . . . . Jones never got a shot in."

That last part about "I'll always be a Steeler" can't be too encouraging for Dolphin fans, nor should the fight. Miami = joke franchise.

The Palms is Porter's regular hangout. I've seen him in there plays craps wearing his old Colorado St. jersey before. Actually when we talked to him he was very friendly, of course we weren't busting his balls like Jones probably was.

I dont care what he is off the field.

This team needs lions like that on the defense. Porter is crazy and he isnt just all talk.. He backs it up.

Unless he suddenly sucks now because he's a Dolphin, which on this board would almost be par for the course.

what's interesting to me is if Porter had punched Levi Jones in the face on the field, he'd have maybe gotten a 5 game suspension a la Albert Haynesworth. More likely, he would have gotten like a 2 game suspension, cause what Haynesworth did was arguably much worse (Giroude wasn't in his face, was helpless on the ground and not expecting it). Either way, Porter'd be looking at some missed game checks, but more than likely no criminal charges.

But he does it off the field, and he's looking at a misdemeanor battery.

Hey, LT, how about the owner's son (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4188/is_20060823/ai_n16687796)?

The son of Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga pleaded no contest to drunken driving for a 2003 incident in which he's accused of hitting a pedestrian, his attorney told the South Florida Sun- Sentinel.

Robert Ray Huizenga, 44, entered the plea Monday to a felony DUI charge and a misdemeanor count of refusing to submit to a blood/ breath test, attorney David Bogenschutz said.

Not happy about this. At least it was a football player that he got into it with instead of just some random guy (or worse, gal) I mean you love that kind of intensity on the field but you cant do stuff like this. According to reports it doesnt sound like this is the case but I hope Levi started it, I wouldnt have any problem with Porter just defending himself. It is kinda funny though that a LB just beat the heck out of a LT.

You said that when Harrington came off the bench. Now that was a very small hope. Like I said in another thread, it didn't take me (and a lot of other people) long to want to see him benched in favor of Cleo. Not because I expected Cleo to be an all world QB but because he was an unknown, unlike Joey. Maybe he would have played well, maybe he would have crashed and burned but at least we would have had a better idea of what we had. Instead we stuck with Joey even long after it became obvious that that he was mediocre at best and didn't play Cleo until the last 2 games, in which he actually looked pretty good, certainly better than Joey.

Mr. Miyagi
03-19-2007, 12:10 PM
Yeah in one of those Harrington games my dog actually had a better QB rating than him.

Las Vegas - Mother Theresa was cited by Las Vegas police today after allegedly punching a showgirl in the face.

Theresa signed with the Miami Dolphins at 11:02 AM that same morning and immediately flew to Las Vegas to drink, get high, and engage in street brawls by 4:00 PM.

"That punk ass ***** had it coming," said Theresa in a statement she gave to police. "That's right, I'm a bad ass mother now, G. Don't be gettin all up in my grill with your big fake titties."

Police have been unable to confirm a rumor that upon her release Ms. Theresa headed straight for former Dolphin Randy McMichaels house.

I think TKO as long as he doesn't get a major injury - or one that keeps him out for a couple of weeks or longer that's not major (like a pulled hammy) - he'll be back to about 80-90% of his former self - we need to keep him - he'll change his attitude if we start winning.

Score one for LtFinFan. Plus I suppose the 6'5" 307 lb Levi Jones is not exactly a helpless victim.

I sure can't claim innocence on bar related misbehavior, at least in the days before I got a big-boy job. But then the Associated Press doesn't follow my ass around. If you've got the football nation watching your every move and you still can't keep from pummelling people, you're probably a thug. OK, now that we have a little more info I am starting to feel a little less bad about this.

Porter was issued a summons on a misdemeanor battery charge after the Sunday altercation that began inside the Palms hotel-casino, Las Vegas police Officer Martin Wright said.
"They went outside. In the valet area, one struck the other, causing a small laceration above the eye," Wright said Monday, calling the injury minor. So they were inside, started talking trash and agreed to take it outside. I dont have a huge problem with that. Espicialy since both of them are big guys and its not like Porter was picking on the skinny kid or something.

The Bengals didn't have much to say about the latest incident involving one of their players. Over a nine-month period, nine Bengals have been arrested.
"We have determined that he did not sustain any serious injuries," team spokesman Jack Brennan said of Jones. "Other than that, it's just not something that warrants any comment."
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/03/19/bc.fbn.nflplayer.fight.ap/index.html
Sounds to me like someone started talking trash, agreed to take it outside, got his ass kicked and then went crying to the police. It was still probably dumb of Porter and it doesnt put a great face on the Miami Dolphins organization but this is one heck of a differant scenreo than Porter just walking up to Jones in a casino and sucker punching him in the face.

I'm really surprised that people that are trained and paid to hit people aren't involved in more incidents like this. At least it shows that there really are some form of rivalry in pro football, and not just in college (you know, when players swing with their helmets.)
I hope little Levi 6'5" 300+ pounds Jones is okay though :)

Well, not only did he get arrested and charged with a misdemeanor battery, it turns out he is a thug.

A thug signed by the dolphins. Who woulda thought it?

"Mark Curnutte of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that a police report sent to the Las Vegas district attorney's office on Friday states that video evidence of the Sunday night incident between Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter and Bengals tackle Levi Jones shows that Porter approached Jones at a gaming table and punched him.

Specifically, Porter punched Jones above the eye with a closed fist. Then, several unidentified men joined in and punched Jones.

The police report contradicts prior published reports indicating that the fight occurred outside of the Palms Casino. The police report also contradicts a supposed eyewitness account that the tussle resembled a Rocky movie, featuring Jones hurling Porter through the air before Porter kicked Jones in the head.

It's still not clear why Porter and the other men punched Jones. As one league source told us on Saturday: "Seven people would be a short line to stand in to get the chance to kick Levi Jones' ass."

VIDEO COMING OF PORTER-JONES?

Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com reports that police are expected to release videotape (http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=5946) of the Las Vegas fight between Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter and Bengals left tackle Levi Jones. The video could corroborate reports that Jones was attacked by as many as seven men.
Hobson also reports that two chains taken from Jones during the incident were anonymously returned to the Palms Casino.
Porter was charged with misdemeanor battery. No charges were filed against Jones.

it's the offseason where mole hills get made into mountains with great smug holier than 'thou-ness.

As far as his payday, I would imagine his hardwork and hardware has finally allowed him to "cash in" wouldn't you say? As opposed to others *cough* who are getting grossly paid for their "potential."

As far as his play, why don't we wait until the season starts to cast judgement of his play, just like one should do with any FA, even the grossly overpaid ones *cough* . IMO football is a bit more complicated than the average fans cares to admit to, so when they can see obvious positive or negative stats than they can easily make half ass judgements not really knowing completely what had led to those stats--a la the Madden mentality. Jeez, I guess after saying all of that, it is easy to be smug around here.

Well duh, I don't think they're jumping for joy over it, but I think some people are being just a bit over melodramatic over it. It was a stupid fight (ESPECIALLY if there was others involved in the incident as well) but he was in Cameron's office the next day to apologize and set things straight. It seems like when that o-lineman that the Bills drafted tried to end someone's career by taking his knee out apologized, everything was hunky dory. "In his first comments on a casino cold-cocking that he absorbed earlier this month, Bengals left tackle Levi Jones tells Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com about the incident that resulted in Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter being cited for misdemeanor battery.

"A cowardly assault by a coward," Jones said. "One versus seven, six from behind. The police report came out and told the truth. Joey Porter did not kick Levi Jones' ass. Basically what he did was walk up to me, get my attention talking trash while his boys jumped me from behind. They plotted the thing. He was shooting craps. I was playing blackjack. He saw me, there was no exchange before he just came up on me.

"[W]hen there are six and seven guys with him, he's brave now," Jones said. "Strength in numbers. I guess he felt like the numbers were with him. He's been doing this for years, telling everyone he’s going to do this to me and do that to me."

Still, Jones won't be focused on Porter when the numbers are 11-on-11 during the 2007 season. “[T]rust me," Jones said, "when we play Miami I have a lot bigger problems to worry about than Joey Porter. I'm going against probably the best defensive end in the league in Jason Taylor. I'm not going to be worried about Joey."
