Ted Thompson wise to hold back on overpaying for free agents
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

It’s not a coincidence that the 2007 free agency season has turned into an asinine auction, in which an inconsistent cornerback (Nate Clements (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=61&p=8&c=1&nid=3026632)) becomes the richest defensive player in the history of the game with an eight-year, $80 million deal. Sure, Clements did succumb 101 yards and a touchdown to the pedestrian Brandon Jones (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=61&p=8&c=1&nid=2981813) in a do-or-die elimination game against Tennessee in Week 16. And he could be held solely responsible for Buffalo losing 20-17 to Detroit when Roy Williams (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=61&p=8&c=1&nid=2981901) caught 10 passes for 161 yards and a score.

But with a league-high $40 million in cap room, who else was San Francisco going to spend its excess dough on to shore up an anemic pass defense? Corners Tory James (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=61&p=8&c=1&nid=2462192) and Travis Fisher (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=61&p=8&c=1&nid=3042432) aren’t much competition for Clements.......

Overpaid.. absolutely he was.. If Im Buffalo, I wouldn't pay that for any CB, not even Champ Bailey.

However.. Nate Clements is far from "average" among CB's and anyone who says otherwise is a crackhead.

Read the rest of the article - The Answer posted this because of the Clements bashing.

The Answer looks forward to a lazy, unmotivated Clements following Jonas Jennings subpar play in San Fran next year. Good riddance to one of the most overrated players in Bills history.

I was kind of soured on Nate Clements back in 2004 when he screwed us against the Jaguars.

We were leading the Jaguars in the final seconds of the game.

Byron Leftwich tossed up a hail mary on 4th down.

Now, all Clements had to do was bat it down.

You know, basic pee wee league fundamentals that even kids know.

But instead - Clements went for the interception like a glory hog.

Thus, the Jags caught it and went on to win the game.

Ever since then I've seen Clements as a selfish, "me-first" kind of player.

Don't forget the first Jets game in 2004 as well - he gave a up a key conversion that allowed the jets to retake the lead for good - You can argue that Clements is the reason the Bills failed to make the playoffs that year.

Clements has always been a sporadic player and never consistent enough to be a domimant CB in this league - San Fran is not getting what they paid for.

Way to quote yourself, very necessary.

And how is there big spending trouble ahead? Owners will continue to spend more and more on these players in relation to rise of the salary cap. Sure, some teams can be a lot more creative than others due to having owners with larger pocketbooks.

And as we all know the tv contracts pay for the cap room...increase in tv revenues = increase in cap.

I have no idea why some people are so worried and/or enamored over football contracts going up the way they are. It's just the marketplace and the marketplace can afford these contracts.

Roy Williams burnt Terrence McGee in the Detroit game. McGee had to play the #1 CB spot that game because Clements was slightly injured.

First we had the Drewpie, then the McGahee apologist, now it appears there are Clements excuse makers as well - good lord.

he's better than average, I'll give you that. But he's still way overrated. The guy was never as good as he got credit for. He gambled way too much and made selfish plays.

WTF are you talking about?

I'm not making excuses for Clements. Your article blames Clements for the Detroit game.

He wasn't the one covering Williams. How is that Clements fault?

To be fair, very few corners don't get burned by Roy Williams.

Look at the obscene amount of money being thrown around so far this offseason for average/mediorce players and don't tell The Answer that there aren't spending problems ahead - especially considering this was a 'weak' free agent class. - This hurts the small market teams the most, especially if the have the 'bargain/2nd tier' FA mentality like Buffalo has for the most part the last few years.

Won't be long before players the likes of Josh Reed and Coy Wire get $100 million dollar deals.....

The Answer didn't write this piece- regardless of who was covering Williams in the Detroit game, it doesn't hide the fact that Clements is an overrated player that gives up more big plays than he makes.

I never said Clements wasn't overrated or overpaid. The minute the contract was announced I said he wasn't worth that kind of money.

But The Answer had to go and twist my words around.

I made a valid point. You twisted it into what you wanted it to say.

Are you serious? Have you fallen off your rocker?

How much do you expect the cap to be for those type players to get 100 million dollar deals? 300mill? 500mill? It'll be at least a decade til we see a cap anywhere near 300mill...and that's if the TV contracts keep steadily rising.

It's not like one team operates on a 400 mill cap, another on an 80 mill cap...every team has the same cap to work under to bring players in, there isn't a clear advantage from one team to another, other than some creative accounting that can screw you years down the line. So sure you can load up in years 1 through 3 but by year 5, you're purging half the roster and starting over.

Rockstar - The Answer apologizes for the misunderstanding. He's just eager to shoot down the impending hordes of Mcgahee/Clements trolls that will no doubt emerge to defend their overrated heros in the coming weeks and months similar to the Drewpie movement circa 2004/2005.
