    Big spending a troubling trend

    Nate Clements

Ted Thompson wise to hold back on overpaying for free agents

It’s not a coincidence that the 2007 free agency season has turned into an asinine auction, in which an inconsistent cornerback (Nate Clements) becomes the richest defensive player in the history of the game with an eight-year, $80 million deal. Sure, Clements did succumb 101 yards and a touchdown to the pedestrian Brandon Jones in a do-or-die elimination game against Tennessee in Week 16. And he could be held solely responsible for Buffalo losing 20-17 to Detroit when Roy Williams caught 10 passes for 161 yards and a score.

But with a league-high $40 million in cap room, who else was San Francisco going to spend its excess dough on to shore up an anemic pass defense? Corners Tory James and Travis Fisher aren’t much competition for Clements.......

Overpaid.. absolutely he was.. If Im Buffalo, I wouldn't pay that for any CB, not even Champ Bailey.

However.. Nate Clements is far from "average" among CB's and anyone who says otherwise is a crackhead.

Read the rest of the article - The Answer posted this because of the Clements bashing.

The Answer looks forward to a lazy, unmotivated Clements following Jonas Jennings subpar play in San Fran next year. Good riddance to one of the most overrated players in Bills history.

I was kind of soured on Nate Clements back in 2004 when he screwed us against the Jaguars.

We were leading the Jaguars in the final seconds of the game.

Byron Leftwich tossed up a hail mary on 4th down.

Now, all Clements had to do was bat it down.

You know, basic pee wee league fundamentals that even kids know.

But instead - Clements went for the interception like a glory hog.

Thus, the Jags caught it and went on to win the game.

Ever since then I've seen Clements as a selfish, "me-first" kind of player.

Don't forget the first Jets game in 2004 as well - he gave a up a key conversion that allowed the jets to retake the lead for good - You can argue that Clements is the reason the Bills failed to make the playoffs that year.

Clements has always been a sporadic player and never consistent enough to be a domimant CB in this league - San Fran is not getting what they paid for.

Way to quote yourself, very necessary.

And how is there big spending trouble ahead? Owners will continue to spend more and more on these players in relation to rise of the salary cap. Sure, some teams can be a lot more creative than others due to having owners with larger pocketbooks.

And as we all know the tv contracts pay for the cap room...increase in tv revenues = increase in cap.

I have no idea why some people are so worried and/or enamored over football contracts going up the way they are. It's just the marketplace and the marketplace can afford these contracts.

Roy Williams burnt Terrence McGee in the Detroit game. McGee had to play the #1 CB spot that game because Clements was slightly injured.

                      Terrence McGee. #1 corner.

First we had the Drewpie, then the McGahee apologist, now it appears there are Clements excuse makers as well - good lord.

Good thing we don't need good corners in a cover two.

he's better than average, I'll give you that. But he's still way overrated. The guy was never as good as he got credit for. He gambled way too much and made selfish plays.
