PHOENIX - Patriots [team stats] running back Laurence Maroney [stats] had offseason shoulder surgery that revealed “fairly significant damage,” according to a league source, though the long-term impact is unclear.

Maroney felt shoulder pain down the stretch and in the playoffs that limited his ability to absorb contact. He underwent exploratory surgery that revealed more damage than anticipated, and corrective surgery was performed.

The exact nature of his injury is unclear, though it was enough to land Maroney in a sling. Team spokesman Stacey James could not confirm last night if Maroney is taking part in the team’s offseason conditioning program.

The surgery is just the latest physical setback for the running back, who also suffered torn rib cartilage and a minor knee sprain during the season. With veteran Corey Dillon [stats] cut at the start of free agency, Maroney will enter the season as the lead back........

Follow up from the Herald (http://news.bostonherald.com/blogs/patriots/):

There’s a story in today’s Herald detailing running back Laurence Maroney’s postseason shoulder surgery. Before leaping to any conclusions (his career’s over! we need to draft another running back!) it’s important to note what we do and don’t know.

What we know: Maroney underwent surgery shortly after the season and what was hoped to be a routine procedure revealed more damage than expected. A league source termed it “fairly significant.” Maroney ended up in a sling and spent time in Foxboro rehabbing thereafter.

What we don’t know: Some crucial details, that we’ll work on bringing you in the next day or two. The first would be which shoulder. Is it his ball-carrying arm (generally his left) or his straight-arming one (generally his right)? The second would be exactly what the surgery repaired. A torn rotator cuff? Dislocation? A bone issue? And then there’s the most important question of all — how long he’ll be sidelined and what carryover effect, if any, there’ll be heading into the season. Best-case scenario, the problem is fixed and he’s ready to go for minicamp. But right now, these are all things we don’t know.

On the news front, running back Laurence Maroney underwent shoulder surgery after the AFC Championship Game. That Maroney underwent surgery was first reported by the Boston Herald, and has been confirmed. Maroney will naturally be limited in the team's offseason program, but the injury isn't expected to threaten his 2007 season.

Who's celebrating it? The Answer was just posting as an FYI....would be a big loss for NE though, almost deju vu when promising tailback Robert Edwards after he tore his knee up in a pro bowl flag football game back in 98/99.....

On a side note, has anyone seen that Edwards has had a pretty good career the last couple years in Canada?

Considering who posted it, it's par for the course.

The Answer wasn't aware of this, but that's great to hear. Edwards was a promising stud back in the late 90's replacing Curtis Martin.

Hopefully the same fate isn't in the cards for Maroney.....

My bad - The Answer was on a roll posting articles about your beloved dolfellons with thumbs up icons.

Regardless, thumbs up has been changed to a sad smiley icon.
