I think he measures up quite favorably. Williams and Taylor both had way more picks in their rookie seasons, and I think Taylor might be FS.
Donte Whitner's rookie year:
Year G Total Solo Asts Sacks Int Yds Avg TD No TD
2006 15 105 67 38 0.0 1 10 10 0 0 0

Michael Huff's rookie year:
Year G Total Tkl Ast Sacks Int Yds Avg Lg TD Pass Def
2006 16 78 64 14 0 0 0 0.0 0 0 1

Roy Williams' rookie year:
Year G Total Tkl Ast Sacks Int Yds Avg Lg TD Pass Def
2002 16 99 88 11 2 5 90 18 85 2 3

Sean Taylor's rookie year:
Year G Total Tkl Ast Sacks Int Yds Avg Lg TD Pass Def
2004 15 76 60.0 16 1 4 85 21.2 45 0 9

Troy Polomalu's rookie year:

Polamalu is a beast, Williams is the ****tiest cover safety in the game, Taylor is another thug off the street, Huff has always been overrated (Lendale White Embarrassed Him 2 Many Times!) Whitner could be the 2nd best of them all.

Deron Landry had a better year.... but what does it matter?

It'll be shwon over time if Whitner is a great S or not.... he had a good rookie year, now let's see how he does with some experience.

Did I forget anyone?

Bob Sanders, Eugene Wilson, Ken Hamlin, Ed Reed, Michael Boulware, Michael Lewis, Adam Archuleta, Adrian Wilson.

I don't know that a players rookie season is the best judge of how good he is going to be. It is as much a factor of playing time as anything.

However, I would add the above guys to the list of recently drafted S who have done well in the league.

I watched Whitner closely and he's missed quite a lot of tackles but seems to be around the ball. I'm hoping he get's better in his second year.

None of them had 100 in thier rookie campaigns, so it's looking good.

is it really a good thing to have a safety making 100 tackles though? Ideally the ballcarrier would be stopped before ever reaching the safety....

a 46 safety would be good ... a cover-2 ... um, no

This might be a problem if we played the Falcons for 16 games...

Ed Reed is the total package. Great cover skills and can hit like a truck. And look at his int's since his rookie year. Best safety in the game for my money.

but that means you have to have a D that stops the run, we don't

Too much common sense their.

I think Whitner will be a pretty damn good Safety as well as Simpson. And with these two guys having already played just about an entire season side by side, they could potentialy form one of the most formidable safety duos in the NFL within the next couple of years. But I am not saying that they will. What I am saying is that coming into their second year together, they will both be better than last year and that is a scarry thought for QBs.

Whitner can go for 200 tackles with the way our LB situation is looking now

Not that I'm nit-picking, but it's interesting that his percentage of solo tackles to overall tackles is only 64%, while the others you listed are 78% or higher.

Never said it did...but if you're going to compare players' stats, it's a difference that stuck out to me.
