OLINDO TO NEW ORLEANS

A league source tells us that the Dolphins have traded kicker Olindo Mare to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.

Per the source, Mare's contract will be transferred to the Saints as-is, with no reduction in the $1.5 million base salaries that he is due to earn in each of the next three seasons.

Mare's exit from Miami became a certainty when the Dolphins signed Jay Feely last month. Mare reportedly had been pressing the team to either trade him or release him.

The latest move is a bad sign for incumbent Saints kicker John Carney. The veteran is signed through 2007, and a salary of $820,000. Carney came to the NFL in 1988, and has played for the Bucs, Chargers, and Saints. He has kicked for the Saints since 2001.

wow....how could you give up a 6th round pick for a kicker that was most likely going to be cut?

Nice job, Miami! You robbed them.

I guess the saints didn't want to go on a bidding war with other teams who were interest in getting Mare.

Next up: John Carney feels disrespected by the Saints, who end up trading him to Dallas for a 6th round pick.

Coming this spring: Martin Gramatica feels disrespected by the Cowboys....

Mare should do great in a dome. Still has a booming leg for kick-offs. Dome may help his accuracy

Mare might have a rebirth in New Orleans. I can't imagine kicking off that dirt infield in Miami is good for a kicker's psyche.

Good deal for Miami, getting something for him, though.

Kudos to Miami for picking up a pick for someone who was going to be cut soon.

Good luck to Mare, he had some great moments for the Dolphins, but some real heart breaking ones (ESPECIALLY AGAINST THOSE DARN PATRIOTS.) IMO his best kick was against the Broncos (I think in either 02 or 03) when he kicked the 50+ yarder to win the game. His worst kick was when he missed on two different opportunities against the Patriots (I believe it was the 1st of the Patriots recent SB run.)

With Feely, he comes a bit cheaper, and has the experience in kicking in some bad environments, especially when the Giants would be at home.

The organization had paid him his bonus, I think around $250,000, so even with Feely signed, I think it gave them a little leverage. With this trade, it gives us 9 picks total:
1st round (9)
2nd round (40)
2nd round (60)
3rd round (71)
4th round (108)
6th round (181)
6th round (199)
7th round (219)
7th round (238)

We would've had another pick had Big Daddy shown up to the Broncos in time. This is pretty weird to see us have this many picks, since we used to trade them away at the drop of the hat in the past. Big thanks to the new sheriffs!
