    Carr signs with Carolina

The Carolina Panthers won the battle for free agent quarterback David Carr early Friday morning, reaching agreement in principle with the former Houston Texans star on a two-year contract, the financial details of which were not immediately available.

    Carr

Carr, was released by the Texans after Houston acquired Matt Schaub in a trade with Atlanta. The first player selected overall in the 2002 draft, Carr will serve as the backup to Panthers starter Jake Delhomme, who is coming off an uneven 2006 season.

Carolina coach John Fox reiterated during the Panthers' courtship of Carr that Delhomme is the unchallenged starter, but the addition of Carr certainly provides an interesting alternative if the incumbent struggles as he did a year ago.

Carr, 27, chose the opportunity with the Panthers over one in Seattle. He visited with Carolina coaches and team officials on Monday and Tuesday, then made a two-day trip to meet with the Seahawks, where he would have also been a backup. After returning from the Seattle visit, Carr counseled with his wife and opted for the deal with Carolina.
The Cleveland Browns also indicated interest in Carr in recent days and the Miami Dolphins considered him as well. The only visits he made, however, were to Carolina and Seattle.

David Carr has agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers on a two-year contract.
Carr reportedly left his trip in Carolina a few days ago without signing because he wanted a chance to start elsewhere. Miami and Oakland were slow to act, so Carr chose to be Jake Delhomme's backup instead. Delhomme was inconsistent in 2006 and he'll be on a shorter leash now.

This is too funny. He didn't even consider Miami despite him having a legitimate shot at starting there. What is it that FTP always says...about players not wanting to come to Buffalo? Miami is so bad, players rather go play backup somewhere else rather than start there!!!

David Carr's contract is worth $6 million over two seasons. He received a $3 million signing bonus.
That's about right. As backups go, Carr is near the top of the payscale along with Brian Griese. That the Panthers were so aggressive getting a deal done recognizes that Carr isn't your average backup. He'll try to rehab his career and be ready to go if Jake Delhomme goes through another prolonged funk.

Guess this means the only option left for Miami is Drew Statuesoe - sad part is he'd probably even turn miami down because of Mularkey still coaching down there.

nope, they are also heavily pursuing Trent Green. I wouldn't be surprised if a draft day deal was done for him in exchange for a 3rd round pick or something.

Smart move by both Carr and Carolina.

A 3rd rounder for a 37 year old washed up QB?????

Yikes - no wonder Miami is a joke.

So if we were to sign the washed up QB and he was to have big games in both meetings that led to wins, that wouldn't look too good on the Bills defense correct? I guess the more people was to talk crap and talk down on another team makes the wins that much sweeter when they're proven wrong-- I guess we'll have to see what happens. Good luck to you guys in the offseason.

IMO, I really don't think they will budge on giving up anything too high if anything in regards to a draft pick. At best, maybe one of the extra 6th round picks we acquired, but I could be proven wrong, it won't be the 1st or the last time.

This is how I currently view our QB situation:
                      in no particular order:
                      Daunte Culpepper
                      ***maybe Trent Green****
                      Cleo Lemon
1st or maybe a 2nd round picked QB depending on how the beginning of the drafts works out
Gibran Hamdan (FA that I believe has experience with Cameron)

If both Culpepper and Green are on the same team, all QB's will battle it out, but whomever loses will probably hit the bricks. Call me stubborn, but I'm still giving Culpepper an incomplete since he still wasn't 100% last year, this year will be a real put up or shutup situation for him. I really believe that if it's either Culpepper or Green is the starting QB on opening day, they will be warming the spot for the future QB whether it's later that season or until next year. Maybe Cleo Lemon is the new "Ray Lucas" but I am intrigued to what he could possibly bring to the table, I believe he could really fly under the radar.

Don't get your hopes up. We're gonna send Green into retirement.

And of all people, it's gonna be Kiwauke (sp) Thomas that's gonna give him a concussion.

Perhaps.....just perhaps....the Fins didn't want to pay 3 mil. a year for possibly a back-up?? I would not have minded him but hopefully we are drafting a QB. Carr would have been nice but not at that price
