If I remember correctly the story that I've heard is that Gilbert had a falling out with the Sabres and with Martin and Robert after he retired (sorta like the Beatles) This was when Seymour H. Knox III was still the owner of the Sabres not the Rigas.

Rigas definitly owned them at the time of this video.

Gilbert may have had a falling out but he must have patched things up because he is at the arena all the time in the last couple years.
