    Okoye drafted and... ?

IN DraftBoys thread about Draft Scenarios (I) He outlined a scenario in which AP, Willis and Lynch were all gone before the Bills pick at 12. (I wont shoot the messenger because the scenario could play itself out like that).

Naturally, in that case Amobi Okoye would be the BPA. I got absolutely nothing against Okoye. He's a "Marv" type of guy, very mature and in a few years POTENTIALLY could develop into a Tommie Harris type of player.

It's easy to say lets pluck Okoye from the board and plug him in.

But here is my question, what do you do IF you draft Okoye?

FORGET Tim Anderson, I won't even count him. But teams carry four defensive tackles on Sundays. If we drafted Okoye, then someone else is going to be either cut or watching the games on Sunday in street clothes like the rest of us.

1- Larry Tripplett- Do you give up on a guy you gave $18 mill over 5 years too after one year?
2- John McCargo- by trading up to get into the first, we invested a lot to acquire him.
3- Kyle Williams- One of the steals of the draft, he was arguably our best DT last year.
4- Darwin Walker- The vet that we traded Takeo Spikes for.

We can debate it until the end of the earth, but the bottom line is you only keep 4 DT's on the active roster, so if we took Okoye then SOMEONE has to go.

For that reason and that reason only, IMO that's why you dont draft Okoye. It doesnt fix one of the gaping holes we currently have. Also, by taking Okoye it shows really bad front office management in that one of these DT's becomes the odd-man out.. BUt that's only my opinion and irrelevant.

My question for the board is if we take Okoye then who is out (not counting Tim Anderson, he's already given) Someone has to go. Like I said, one of those four either gets cut or becomes inactive on Sundays.

    Who and why?

Personally, I agree with you..And I dont understand why we would.. but in Draftboy's thread, there were a lot of cases for Okoye, especially being the BPA. So there are at a handful of people at minimum who think Okoye would be the pick under that scenario.

I already know what Okoye would bring to the team.. My question to the draft Okoye supporters is who is OUT if we did take him.

and Thurm. You'd be that ready to quickly get rid of Williams? He might be the most unheralded but personally I think he was far and away our best DT last year.

This is a pretty good reason why I don't want to see them draft Okoye with the 12th pick.

If Okoye is available at #12, he will be available at #13 also. No way we take a DT with our 1st pick since we already have 6 on the roster(McCargo, Williams, Tripplett, Walker, Anderson, Jefferson). I think we do 1 of 3 things

#1 - try and trade down...pick up another pick and take the best available LB
#2 - stay put and take the highest rated LB left on our draft board(Beason, Poz, Timmons)
#3 - stay put and take the highest rated CB on our draft board

Convert someone to DE about only choice, so lets not draft him and draft AP

Who says you can only have four DT's active? If the success of our D-line is predicated on guys staying fresh and rotating in, why can't we have a 5 man rotation?

We could always try and trade whoever the odd man out is.

Plus, what are the chances that all 4 of our current DT's are going to stay healthy for all 16 games.

I agree though, that it's a moot point. I don't think Okoye lasts to 12.

We would never take Okoye. We would take Ted Ginn or Leon Hall. Or trade down.

I'm not one to say that Buffalo needs more help on the D-line... However, I couldn't leave a player like Okoye on the board if he fell.

There remains a very small possibility that Schoebel and/or Kelsay could be converted to LB (Either in part or full time duty). In that very unlikely scenario, it would be conceivable to have 3 larger individuals on the line... Especially if they're known for getting pressure on the QB (Like Tripplett, McCargo, Okoye and Walker can do... not to mention Williams).

Of course there could be another possibilty here... The Bills could Eli Manning his ass to the highest bidder.

Staying on topic with Pat's thread, If we drafted Okoye...

We'd have to trade Walker to a playoff team in need of a pass rush specialist for a draft pick. He's the most logical choice out of the DT's on the roster. We're not winning the SB anytime soon so it would have to be time to tank the old vet in order to give our young guys the needed playing time. Plus, if Okoye is too good to pass up then we'd need extra picks anyway. With certain glaring holes to fill, even a second day pick would be valuable.

DT Roster: Tripplett, McCargo, Williams, Okoye

After trading for Walker and having a first rounder who Marv and his staff really like in McCargo, I don't see us drafting Okoye or Branch, for that matter.

We either trade down or take a linebacker like Beason or Posluszny.
Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?
