TAMPA - Bucs middle linebacker Shelton Quarles has always taken extreme pride in playing with broken bones, stiff joints and sore muscles, facts of life in the NFL.
But concussions are another matter. Quarles, usually evasive when speaking about injuries, told the Times on Thursday he had six concussions during the 2005 season. Because of lingering effects, doctors have advised him to retire.

NOPE not after six concussions in one season.

Great player, but he's getting older, and the game is taking its toll.
The Bucs will miss him.

The NFL really needs to take a very serious look at concussions and what they can do to help prevent them IMO.

I like Quarles but his time is come and gone and with his injury history not likely a very good move. If he came cheap enough and was ok as a backup, providing doctors cleared him, maybe....but i doubt it.

the fact that we're even discussing someone with that age and injury history shows how bad the LB situation really is.

Honestly, even at his age we could use someone with his experience for depth and mentoring the young guys, but the injury history makes this way too risky.

Now, is he smart? Since he's familiar with the system, a low position on the coaching totem pole may not be out of the question...

If he planned on retiring, why wouldn't Tampa just let him retire? He was released.
