My Flip Idea - Move Schobel to OLB

At 243 lbs. he's almost 30 lbs lighter than Adelius Thomas, the All-Pro LB the Pats just signed away from the Ravens. Thomas was playing OLB.

I just imagine how much pressure Schobel could bring without a 325 lb. OT in his way. I know Schobel can run like a LB and does drop back into short coverages already. If Willis is taken, then a DE like Carriker or Anderson probably drops to us. Carriker is 6-6,291. Anderson is 6-5 1/2, 284. They are not going to get washed out on sweeps, like a 243 lb. DE would. Plus they are ready to start. Both have some pass rush skills and would tie up the OT.

Schobel freed up to run and terrorize the QB. That's very tempting. He could look amazing in that role. A pass rushing LB bringing incredible pressure. The reincarnation of Bryce Paup.

    Hmmm..

    Good post!

I thought I was alone with this thinking. I've seen this transition happening all offseason. It may even be true for Kelsay as well. I think we're gonna trend toward 3 or 4 of our DT's on the line and drop Schoebel and Kelsay into a hybrid role. Our DT's can really get after the QB.

I thought the same thing, and even wondered if the weight loss was at the behest of the coaching staff - with the idea of moving him to LB. It seems strange that a DE would lose that kind of weight on his own.
Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?

No thanks, if he's a pro-bowl DE ... why mess with it?

          Better chance using Kelsay.

They're actually very similar in weight. Paup was 247 when he led the league in sacks in 1995 (with 17.5).

It can be done, I'm not opposed to the idea and I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Dick and Marv have discussed this already.

But here's my concern: Paup was a 3-4 OLB. We play a 4-3. There's a big difference in those two roles (OLB in both schemes) if Schobel was to be an every-down player at that position. Paup's only job was basically to get after the QB. In the 4-3, the Will LB (where he'd obviously have to play) can't be a pass-rush specialist. He has to be able to fill gaps and stop the run, as well.

He also has to get back in pass coverage. Who knows if he can do that?

......why would you move a pro-bowl DE to OLB the season after he goes to the pro-bowl.....

if its working for him at DE why change it.

hey i got an idea, moorman can run for a little guy, lets make him our new RB....

                  come on.

Buffalo Sabres if you read the whole post you would realize what he was saying. Draft one of the better DEs in the draft like Carriker or Anderson. Reread his post.

I never thought about that when they reported the weight loss. But man wouldnt that be something. hmmmm

JAmes I agree about Aaron but what about Kelsey? Moving him to OLB or tweaner type and drafting Carriker? Not a horrible idea from a fan standpoint. Wonder what the coaches are thinking if it happens they know more then we do.

kelsay doesnt weigh 243. so the coaching staff doesnt seem like they're in any hurry to move him to LB.

Maybe the Willis interest has been a smokescreen so we can take a DE. Schobel is very athletic and he lost 20 pounds which is insane when you think about it. Moving him to LB does two things:

                          1) I think he can play longer 2 years longer at LB, which means more money.

                          2) DE, after 30, tend to be less desirable.

I hghly doubt when the season starts he will be at 243. He is a pro-bowl player and easily our best defenive player on the team. Why move him?

It's dissapointing that our team is so bad that we have to try and experiment with proven players at their prospective positions. Just get the right guys in here and let them play. A jack of all trades but a master of none is NOT the way to go, here.
