Raiders prepared to lose Sam Adams....to Buffalo perhaps?

Released by the San Francisco 49ers last month, defensive tackle Dana Stubblefield didn't have to go very far to find a new employer, as ESPN.com confirmed on Wednesday that the 10-year veteran has agreed to terms with the Oakland Raiders.

Stubblefield, 32, is just the latest onetime 49ers standout to travel across the Bay to sign with the Raiders.

    Stubblefield will sign a one-year, $755,000 contract.

The addition of Stubblefield, a three-time Pro Bowl performer, provides the Raiders with a veteran insurance policy in the event starter Sam Adams does not return to the club. Adams was released by the Raiders last month for cap purposes, has visited with other teams, and seems to be focused in on a deal with the Buffalo Bills.

Adams is a free agent by contract, not by cut.

            Wrong, Phil

The Raiders are over the cap by 45M. They have massive salaries being paid out and this can almost certainly mean these players will be released. The Raiders top salaries for 2003 are Darrell Russell (10M), Sam Adams (5M), Reagan Upshaw (4.45M), Lincoln Kennedy (4.4M), Terry Kirby (4M), Barry Simms (4M), Charlie Garner (3.6M), Tim Brown (3.3M), Barrett Robbins (3.2M) and Anthony Dorsett (3M). If the Raiders released all those players, without signing bonus amortization effecting the cap, they would still only rest around 2M under the projected cap.

            2/28 Released S Anthony Dorsett.
            2/28 Released WR James Jett.
            2/28 Released DE Regan Upshaw.
            2/28 Released DT Sam Adams.
            2/28 Released RB Terry Kirby.
            2/28 Released CB Tory James.

That is what I wondered Jeff! Who in their right mind (except maybe Butler) pays Terry Kirby $4mil?
