    One LB drafted?!!!!

We better be bringing in a vet because going into the 2007 with one new rookie LB and losing 2 when we were weak at this position is borderline stupid.

Posluzny-Crowell-Ellison, backed up by Stammer-DiGiorgio-Haggan with possibly Wire = 7 LBs

          John Wendling

          Weight: 222
          Position: Free/Strong Safety
          College: Wyoming

          OVERVIEW

Wendling concluded his Wyoming football career as one of the most decorated student-athletes in school history. His myriad of honors was highlighted by being named All-America by College Football News and earning one of the most prestigious awards in all of college football by being named a national finalist for the Draddy Trophy, which is presented annually by the National Football Foundation (NFF) to the top football scholar-athlete in the country.
Wendling attended the 49th Annual NFF Awards Dinner in New York City in December 2006, where he was presented with an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as one of only 17 national finalists for the Draddy Trophy. He earned one of the nation's top academic honors in the nation when ESPN The Magazine named him an Academic All-American in voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Wendling helped lead his Rock Springs High School team to a perfect 11-0 record and the Class 5A state championship as a senior. He was named all-state as a senior at three different positions -- running back, defensive back and return specialist. He also earned Super 25 honors from the Casper-Star Tribune. As a junior, he was selected as an all-state defensive back.
He rushed for 1,147 yards as a running back and accounted for 1,875 yards of all-purpose yards his senior season. Wendling scored 17 touchdowns and averaged 9.6 yards every time he touched the ball. During his junior and senior seasons combined, he accounted for more than 3,000 yards of all-purpose yardage and scored 30 touchdowns.
Wendling also excelled in track-and-field, winning the state championship in the long jump as a junior and finishing as the runner-up in the triple jump. An outstanding student, he was a member of the National Honor Society and was active in the student council. He achieved the 4.00 Honor Roll his sophomore, junior and senior years.
Wendling enrolled at Wyoming in 2002, choosing the school over scholarship offers from Brigham Young, Colorado State, Harvard, Princeton and Stanford. He redshirted that season, but started the team's final two contests of the 2003 season. That year, he earned Academic All-Mountain West Conference honors, posting 17 tackles (12 solos) and a fumble recovery in 12 contests.
The All-MWC honorable mention started all 12 games of the 2004 season at free safety. He led the team with 89 tackles (56 solos) while also picking up Academic All-MWC accolades. He picked off three passes, deflected six others and recovered three fumbles.
Wendling was named Academic All-District VII and honorable mention All-MWC in 2005. He finished second on the team with 75 tackles (45 solos), adding one sack and two forced fumbles while starting all 11 games at free safety. He also had three interceptions and three pass break-ups.
The Draddy Award finalist, second-team All-America and All-MWC first-team pick moved to strong safety in 2006. He again led the team with 78 tackles (38 solos), as he caused a fumble and recovered two others, returning one for a touchdown. He batted away four passes and intercepted another. He gained 202 yards on 11 kickoff returns (18.4 avg.) and totaled 119 yards on six rushing attempts out of fake punt formation. In 47 games at Wyoming, Wendling started 37 times. He finished 10th in school history with 259 tackles (151 solos). The team captain had two sacks for minus-14 yards and 4.5 stops for losses of 18 yards. He caused three fumbles and recovered six others, advancing one 54 yards for a touchdown. He deflected 14 passes and intercepted seven others for 24 yards in returns. He averaged 19.8 yards on six rushing attempts and 18.4 yards on 11 kickoff returns.

          ANALYSIS

Positives: Has a lean, tall frame with good muscle development, broad shoulders, tight waist and thick thighs … With another 10 pounds of bulk, he could possible convert to a weakside linebacker in a Cover-2 scheme … Tough and aggressive playmaker with an excellent work ethic and a keen desire to win … Very coachable and team oriented, as he not only made a position switch as a senior, but took on additional duties on special teams, performing capably in any role the coaches placed him in … Shows steady foot speed and acceleration throughout his running stride … Flashes a quick closing burst, agility, balance and body control closing on plays in front of him … Very instinctive and intelligent player, with a high amount of academic awards … Easily takes plays from the chalkboard to the playing field … Has the range to make plays along the sidelines and plays with good alertness, as he is not apt to bite on pump fakes or play action … Even though he's a bit high-cut, he has the loose hips to mirror receivers throughout the route in man coverage … Shows ease of movement and good plant-and-drive agility coming out of his backpedal … Has a good grasp of route progression and keeps his head on a swivel to track the ball in flight … Can close on the ball in a hurry and shows the leaping ability to compete for jump balls … Built and plays like a linebacker, taking a "search and destroy" attitude as he simply crashes into blockers … Quick and active in run support, but needs to do a better job of using his hands to shed … Meets the opponent head-on when covering in the short-range passing area, daring the receiver to try and run with the ball … Suited to play "the box" in an eight-man front … Fills the holes with aggression and has the speed to cover runners coming out of the backfield … Decisive in recognizing the plays and is rarely caught out of position … Maintains position in man coverage, often keeping a hand on his assignment to prevent separation up field … Excels at covering the underneath passes while playing in the zone … Has explosiveness when changing directions, flying to the line of scrimmage to stuff the run … Plays off blocks with force and strikes low at the legs going for the tackle … Has the hands to catch the ball outside the frame work and shows good hip snap to change direction and get back into the play when he out-runs it … Shows good speed and timing getting down field to break up the wedge on the special team coverage units … Quick to recognize the play and will not take false steps in pursuit … Hits bigger than his size indicates and makes sound decisions coming up in run force.
Negatives: Needs to use his hands more efficiently in attempts to shed blocks … Plays with good intensity, but seems to taper off later in games (possible stamina issues) … Good collision type tackler, but needs to wrap with better consistency, as he tends to take a side, resulting in the ball carrier being able to slip off some hits … Needs to do a better job of protecting his feet working near the pile (susceptible to low blocks) … Has very good timed speed, but lacks that explosive second gear or burst to get back into the play … Can't be relied upon as anything more than an emergency fill-in on kickoff returns, as he lacks the hip swerve or wiggle to elude heading up field … Good at making plays in front of him, but does struggle a bit with his speed when having to recover (takes false steps when his cushion is absorbed) … Must make better use of angles when closing on the ball. Compares To: Kerry Rhoees, New York Jets -- Wendling is a tight coverage defender with good speed and keen field instincts … Like Rhodes, he has a knack for always being in position to make the plays in front of him … He shows ease of movement in his backpedal and natural hands for the interception … He needs to use those hands more effectively in attempts to shed blocks and, while he shows good force behind his hits, his wrap-up tackle technique needs refinement … With his ability to play both safety positions, he should see immediate action in nickel and dime schemes.

Maybe the svelte, 243 lb. Schobel really IS moving to LB.
Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?

Earl Everett is undrafted. I hope we're on the horn with him right now. I'm not sure John Abbate is the perfect cover 2 guy, but he might be worth a look at MLB.

I'm curious what they do with Wendling. I'm pretty excited about that pick. surprise, I didn't know much about him prior to the draft but he sure sounds like a player.
Wake up, brush your teeth, and get ready for a day of hating the Dolphins. Or the Pats? How to choose?
