NEW YORK (AP) -- The pre-series problem for the New York Rangers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=nyr) was slowing down Buffalo's high-powered goal scorers, not finding offense of their own.
But through three games, the Rangers have played well defensively. If they can solve Sabres goalie Ryan Miller (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1549) consistently, a series many thought would end quickly could go the distance.
New York beat Buffalo on Sunday for the first time in seven games this season with a 2-1 victory in double overtime. That cut the Rangers' deficit to 2-1 in the series and put them in position to go back to Buffalo all square if they knock off the Sabres again at home on Tuesday night.
Since Buffalo's 5-2 win in the series opener, in which the Sabres scored three times in a four-minute stretch of the second period and added an empty-netter, New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3081) has allowed only four goals in eight periods.
The only problem is, Miller has been touched for only six in the series.
"He was just himself," captain Jaromir Jagr (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=405) said Monday after the Rangers held an optional practice. "We know how good he is. Hopefully he's going to get tired, but I don't know when. We're just waiting for that to happen."
The Sabres scored an NHL-best 308 goals this season and were the only team to have four guys with at least 30. Their depth and speed pose the biggest challenges for opponents because not only can Buffalo roll four lines, it can get goals from anywhere.
Just as the Rangers are trying to beat Miller, the Sabres are struggling against Lundqvist.
"He covers everything really, really well," forward Daniel Briere (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=102) said. "He's very quick and his reflexes are with the best in the league. But I think for us, we have to raise the puck."
Maxim Afinogenov (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=7) -- one of seven Sabres to reach the 20-goal mark -- was dropped to the fourth unit and played alongside Tim Connolly (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=168), also an offensive playmaker who has seen limited ice time because he missed all but the final two games of the season while recovering from post-concussion syndrome.
Miller made 44 saves in the losing effort, his second in eight postseason games this season. He had won five straight games since a loss in Game 2 of the first round against the Islanders.
With Miller's 1.98 goals-against average and .931 save percentage, the Rangers have more than just defense to worry about. New York scored 17 goals in its first-round sweep of Atlanta, including a 7-0 win in Game 3.
"When you play better defense it's tougher to score," Jagr said. "You don't play up-and-down hockey. You can't, because they would kill you. With that skill they've got, you cannot really open it up unless you're losing a lot."
New York coach Tom Renney instilled a defense-first mentality that focuses on accountability for everyone on the ice. He disagrees with his captain that being attentive to keeping pucks out of the Rangers net limits scoring chances at the other end.
His theory is that a strong defense is a key ingredient to producing a prolific offense. So far, the Rangers are waiting for the second part of the payoff.
"We feel good about the fact that we've played this team very, very well outside of the first game. And even then we kind of beat ourselves there," Renney said. "Not to suggest they don't deserve any credit here but we do, too.
"We'll play five periods of hockey every night as long as we win. If we're doing that and the scores are low, obviously we're playing a more complete game."
The Rangers were buoyed after their first win over the Sabres. Buffalo won all four games in the regular season, three decided after regulation.
Renney said the 0-6 mark didn't bother him on its own since he was pleased his players have kept the Sabres in check.
"Regardless of how you feel about how you're playing, you're still saying you're 0-6 against a team," forward Brendan Shanahan (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=841) said. "It was important to get that first win."
The Sabres regulars stayed off the Madison Square Garden ice Monday. Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff wants more force than flash from his team going forward.
"We're kind of a wild horse, and it's been part of our strength," Ruff said. "I don't want to take all that away, but it's tightening down in a couple areas. We know we have to be better, give up a little here, take a little bit more there. That's what playoffs are all about.
"It's out-of-character. It isn't necessarily we need our best players to be our best. We need surprises, too. We need ugly goals to come from around the paint."

I actually think the Sabres started playing better in the latter half of the period. We won more 1-1 battles and the puck spent more time in the rags zone.

I would put Danny at the top of this list. He won't go into the corner ahead of the Ranger player, if he has the puck and feels presure he just throws it away! Great regular season player, not built and no desire to play rough playoff hockey!

Briere must be leading this team in penalties in the postseason... seems like he takes 2-3 pointless ones every night lately. We looked half alive near the end of the period, maybe we can come out and play solid the whole 2nd.

I do not see the Sabres defense pinching in nearly as much as the use to. The Sabres are getting no second chances. The puck is just not bouncing there way this series...Give the Rangers credit. I beg to differ, this is exactly the team we saw, but they're a playing in the playoffs now. They played bad for 65% of the season, but were so much more talented than other teams that they were able to get some wins other teams couldn't. Yeah, they're sure listening to Ruff...that's if Ruff truly is trying to change things up? He's notorious for not attacking the right players soon enough...especially if that player is a captain...i.e. Briere. This guy needs to be benched.

Is it not possible for the team to create traffic in front of the net, screen shots, get deflections??? I'm pretty sure I've seen it at other times this year. All our shots are straight forward from the blue line and Lundquist is having a field day.

If they don't get their asses in gear and show up this period, they're going to let this series, playoffs, season slip away real quickly.

Anyone think this is where we get paid back for the botched review in Game 3? :nervous:

I had a bad feeling. The Rangers can walk away feeling good that they've been "paid back".

They only had 1 camera angle? Come on! There has to be another freaking camer on the ice that picked up that goal.

I am embarrassed at the teams effort in that game. It is a joke. Goal or no we aren't going to win **** with that craphole power play and lackluster effort.

MikeInRoch

The replay on TV was definitely not conclusive. I suspect a better angle (maybe one that no camera is there to see) would show that it was a goal.

We'll I am watching this in HD on a pioneer plasma and i didn't see it go in. I seen it go up to the line and a second later it headed out of the net so who really knows. If you ask all the rags fans it was no goal and we all thought it was real close.

So much for conspiracy theories.

It looked like a goal but I can't say that replay was a 100% conclusive. Way to have multiple views in a playoff game NHL.....

We didn't deserve to win that game, but we got it stolen from us just the same.

The puck clearly slid down his toe and crossed the line under his pad... We need to come out Friday with a serious edge and just stomp the hell out of the Rangers for 60 minutes.

I agree. After they went down 2 goals to none they were an entirely different team. This tells me that they're pussy footing out there.

Ruff needs to light this team up because if the Rangers take 1 game in Buffalo, this series is over in the favor.

I honestly feel the Sabres have had many calls go their way in the Islanders series and 1st 2 against the Rangers... Some of those calls were gifts. Some of those gifts were non-calls that should of gone against the Sabres as well.

This call hurts... but IMO we didn't deserve the break... that's how bad we played...

Typ0
05-01-2007, 08:50 PM
if they would take paralax error into consideration that is clearly a goal to me...and if they aren't going to spend a few bucks to get better angle s down by the net then they should take that into consideration.

I feel that the refs were very one sided on the calls in NY. There were a lot of penalties missed against the Rangers and some soft calls made against Buffalo.

Still, Buffalo has to play with some intensity BEFORE the middle of the 3rd period.

Exactly. You can't surrender a 2 goal lead and then, at the 11:00 mark of the 3rd, try to win a game. You don't deserve a call to go your way when you play like that. I love this team, but they're breaking my heart. I don't want to be relegated to cheering for the wife's Sharks to feel like a part of a playoff run. :(

Like the Holding Call On Campbell, Both Players were shoulder to shoulder, both Players had the Hand off their stick, why the **** do you call one player... and not the other

If the Sabres lose on Friday, this season is over. If they can't get motivated after these horrible efforts, then they will never put in a good effort. Very discouraging.

It's pretty much been this way for most of the playoffs. I don't know what else this team needs to get motivated to play? I guess the Cup doesn't do it for them.

ok did the sabres put forth their best effort? no

but were they completely outplayed? hahaha no

its was a goal that deflected off a skate that was the difference. and a nogoal that was as in as the vanek round 1 goal, meaning it was definitely in but the lack of a camera angle and inconsistent video ruling took it away

the rangers are good. it was a tough game. the sabres found a way to cut a late two-goal lead and then tie it but a technicality kept it from them

theyve lost two very close games in a row and have not been completely outplayed

three game series. i still prefer our team and our chances over the rangers

First off that NO GOAL was a bunch of BS,because it WAS a goal!

That being said,if the Sabres dont win Friday, then this series is over in 6. I hope Im wrong, but this team, particularily our GREAT goal scorers need to get the lead out of their ass and in a hurry. You cant expect to score one goal and ask Miller to win it for you. 1 goal will not win ANY games!

I disagree, Meat...the Rangers have completely outplayed the Sabres up to this point in the series, despite the closeness of the final scores.

The only bright side is even though we've been dominated, we still control the series.

yes- we were up 2-0 and now it's 2-2, and the Sabres were COMPLETELY taken out of their game in both of those losses. Counting the OT's we managed just 2 goals against the Rangers in the last 7.5 periods. That's pathetic, especially from the highest scoring team in the league. We're being manhandled.
