March 13, 2003) -- I flew out to California for the University of Southern California Pro Day this week and the Trojans put on some show for the 59 NFL scouts, coaches and personnel people who showed up. I go to a number of these Pro Day workouts each spring and the speed on the field this day was like a return to the old glory days of USC football. One NFL scout who has been around for 30 years remarked, "It hasn't been like this at USC since the John McKay days."
Golden rush
Four players ran under 4.4 in the 40 yard dash -- CB Darrell Rideaux (4.28), S Troy Polamalu (4.35), RB Sultan McCullough (4.32), WR Kareem Kelly (4.38) -- while RB Justin Fargus (4.37) skipped a chance to better his time from the Combine. One NFL coach turned to me and said, "Let's get these guys a baton and see if they can break the world record in the 4x100 meter relay."
