    Colts Release Strongside LB

Benched for the Colts' playoff stretch run last season, former starting strongside linebacker Gilbert Gardner has now been banished entirely.

Couldn't hurt to take a look at a Cover 2 LB for depth...

he'd probably be worth 850k for depth.

          Per Chris Brown:

LB GARDNER RELEASED: The Colts released linebacker Gilbert Gardner, a former starter, today despite tendering him a qualifying offer earlier this offseason. I'd definitely take a look at this guy. He's young (25), he's familiar with Buffalo's system and he has had some production, although the ESPN.com writeup on Gardner's history was pretty critical. Still even as a depth player he'd be a good addition in my opinion. I thought the Bills would have drafted two linebackers in the draft. They only got one. If they bring this guy in and sign him, I think it would be a pretty good answer to addressing that position further. ---

But in the first 13 games, 12 of which he started, Gardner struggled and so did the Colts' defense, the problems primarily manifested in an inability to stop the run. Gardner was often overpowered at the point of attack and, while his tackle numbers looked good on paper, he was not effective on the field.
He sucked at Cover 2. That's why he got canned. No thanks.

I was under the impression that if Bill Polian drafted someone in the 3rd round that they were destined for greatness. or so I've read recently.

interesting, but is he better than what we got on the roster right now as per depth, i am all for adding a Vet with skills, but maybe not someone who was benched for playing the scheme we are curently trying to run, we will have to see how this pans out, but we got a LBer on the PS Manning from Mich, who i think will surprise in camp this year

every draft pick is a gamble but we should be gambling on positions of obvious need rather than picking players who aren't going to do a damn thing for us this year.

Picking Gardner for depth is a no brainer, at 25 with expierence in the system maybe there is a chance of him having some upside.

The Bills have played against this guy and, I'm sure, studied a lot of film on him. They should know enough about him to make an intelligent decision on whether or not to bring him in.
Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?

                          Stamer, Haggan, Wire, DiGiorgio.

Is he better than any one of those guys? All they need to do is look at enough film to answer that question. If the answer is yes, he should be brought into camp at the very least. He's cheap and his salary won't hurt our cap situation if he does make the team.
