March 4, 2003) -- For years, everybody has heard or read about how important it is to have an outstanding left tackle to protect the quarterback. We even went so far in the early going last year to suggest that Seattle would have problems because left tackle Walter Jones was a holdout and was delayed in getting back. All of a sudden, when Jones played late in the year and was in form, the Seahawks were the league's hottest team. Now I don't know if you credit that to Jones, but you be the judge.

The left tackle is a paramount job to fill. With the exception of a team with a left-handed quarterback, the job of a left tackle is to protect a quarterback's backside. He usually has to block the defensive team's best pass rusher, so teams are looking for players who have quick feet, long arms, speed and, of course, strength.
