Ask Derek Schouman if he's a tight end or a fullback, and he'll properly answer, "Yes." The Bills, searching for blocking versatility among their ball handlers, are attempting to stockpile players who aren't wed to their offensive positions, and Schouman -- hopefully for Buffalo -- will epitomize the flexibility the coaching staff desires by making the team both at his native tight end and as a guy in the mix at fullback.
Buffalo is focused on having roster two-for-ones, and Schouman could fill the bill as a player able to block and field checkdown passes from the end of the line and also take on defenders in the backfield as a rush-blocking fullback. Of course, any production obtained from a final-round pick will be a bonus, and if General Manager Marv Levy grabbed someone who brings depth and can back up two positions, one of the team's later picks could prove to be as promising in his own way as the earlier ones.

Poor man's Chris Cooley anyone? Let's hope so... as was said, any 7th round pick that contributes is a great pickup.

He doesn't have to beat out much.

The Bills may only keep Royal and one other TE. Neither can do what Schouman supposedly can.

What about the word that Cieslak and Neufeld were going to get a look at the H back position. I love going to the Bills page's depth chart and clicking on FB. Absolutely nothing comes up! See for yourself:

They might have to change that one around a bit.

I don't think it'll be hard to beat out Neufeld for the position. He was never good at catching or blocking. He's kind of been a waste of a roster spot and on top of that, I think he was injured last year and is getting old (32 now). I think Schouman should be able to beat him out pretty easily...

I just hope Buffalo decides to end the Kevin Everett project if he doesn't show anything in the preseason. All we ever hear is how great of an athlete he is, but yet he we are how many years later with zero production to show for it. I know he was injured his rookie year, but it's beyond time for Everett to contribute.

I think Everett's going to have to have one heckuva preseason to earn his spot.

Everett's a lost cause.

Schouman is a great addition to this team. I saw every game he played at BSU. I think he will surprise a lot of people. FB or TE ... it will be fun to watch.

And Nall could be our starting QB next season.

I thought I read that Schouman was known more for receiving and that his blocking was suspect? Anyone?

I've seen both saying that he is good and that he isn't. Scott Wright's site has the following which also seems to contradict itself:

Strengths:
Runs good routes...Has decent hands...Solid ball skills and body control...Strong and stout...Does well as a blocker versus moving targets...Versatile and he could play multiple positions..Still improving and had his best season by far as a senior.

Weaknesses:
Is undersized and doesn't have the ideal height or bulk you look for...A marginal blocker at best...Not very tough or physical...Has some durability concerns...Won't do much after the catch...Stiff and isn't a fluid athlete...His upside may be limited.

Notes:
Also being looked at as a potential H-Back or fullback...Missed some time in 2004 with torn knee ligaments...Does everything well but nothing great...A better pass catcher than blocker at this point...Profiles as more of a backup at the next level.

I'm going to take this to mean that he might do well against moving targets like a blitzing corner, but might have a harder time helping block if say someone misses their block upfront or he's asked to help at the line of scrimmage.

In either case, if he just stands there and breathes, he's still better than Neufeld...

Schou has amazing hands and he isnt scared to come across the middle. I dont remember a time when he dropped the ball because of a hit. As a FB I think hes fast enough and big enough to clear the hole but honestly I'd like to see him as a TE just because he's exciting to watch. I think if JP and him connect I can see him being another Antonio Gates. He was a huge weapon for BSU. Just watch the bowl game highlights and you'll see what im talking about. #91
