Where did the Buffalo Sabres' name originate? We asked a guy who has been around the team for a long time. He's the man who put together the French Connection. He is also the coach who got the team to their first playoff appearance.
Joe Crozier knew the answer. He says "Sabres" was the result of a naming contest after Buffalo was awarded an NHL expansion franchise. The owners and management wanted a name other than a variation on Buffalo or Bison.
The name was choosen because of the weapon's strength and precision. The farm team at the time was known as the Cincinnati Swords.
