Jauron eyes prospects to fill roster opening

Wanted: Cornerback. Must be willing to work long hours, be able to play in multiple coverages and be strong in run support. Prior playing experience preferred. Coach Dick Jauron hasn’t placed an ad like this one, but he pretty much flashed the Help Wanted sign when he discussed the Bills’ cornerback situation.

That was a position of need that wasn’t addressed in the draft last month because Nate Clements’ free agency departure leaves the team with only four corners — Terrence McGee, Kiwaukee Thomas, Jabari Greer and Ashton Youboty — that have NFL experience.

So there is an opening at cornerback on this roster and Jauron has this to say to anyone interested: Come and get it.

“We like the guys that we have, but I would think that if you were a free agent corner this is a place where you would be interested in coming because of our lack of great depth there,” Jauron said during the Bills’ rookie minicamp, which concluded Monday. “We brought some in and we’ll keep looking. We’d like to get the best group we can to compete at every position and we’ll look everywhere.”

What? I thought Dick was not a straight shooter like what was implied in the thread where he talked about liking our lb depth.

Well, its nice to see he is being honest about the situation, but they kind of missed the boat. All they can do now is cross their fingers and hope a couple of the guys on the roster pan out.

A lot more than a 5th CB. Sometimes you have to go for value over expediency.

If the Bills are confident in Youboty - and they are, as evidenced by their not taking a corner in rounds 1 or 2 - then all they're looking for now is depth behind the 4 guys who are already here. No big deal, even though every story like this becomes a major negative for some.

CB depth is a lot more likely to see the field than QB depth.

If Losman gets injured and we play Nall, we're screwed. If Losman gets injured and we play Edwards.... we're still screwed.

Not that Hughes are any other 3rd round CB would be a definite contributor, but the need at CB was greater and the chances of a CB contributing this year are MUCH greater than the chances of a backup QB contributing. So my point is that it was a bad decision.

I disagree.

Why is Youboty (a 3rd round CB from a year ago) considered a potential starter, yet a 3rd round CB drafted this year would be fifth on the depth chart?

If Losman goes down, we're screwed with either Edwards or Nall, and you only play one QB at a time (whereas it's 2-3 CB's depending on the defensive formation). Also QB has a much higher learning curve. So a CB would have a much greater chance of contributing this year than a QB. "Value over expediency" is a luxury teams like Buffalo can't afford in the third round and I have a feeling we will be paying for that choice on the field this year.

Our FO has been honest and straightforward for the most part. They said we need to address the OL. They did. They said they'd address the rb, DT, the lb position and that they'll add one more QB. THey did all that. They did admit however that they weren't able to fill all the holes like the cb position in the draft and that they'll continue to search . Now he's come out again and said they still need depth at cb.

When he said he's happy with the lb depth all of a sudden "what's he suppose to say?" posts come out.

yeah, you're right- it's no big deal when the coach publicly expresses a lack of confidence in a position this late in the off-season.

yeah, Jauron should just come out and say we lack LB depth and CB depth and the DL hasnt' really improved- that will sell a lot of tickets!

They were able to address CB before now. They chose not to.

My problem isnt that they drafted Edwards so much.

My bigger problem is there are dozens of CB's on the FA market they could've signed. Whether it be bigger money for a sure starter like a Rod Hood or a 3rd-4th CB to provide more stability and depth.

I look at the cap room we have left and I'm disgusted at the lack of addressing we did outside the OL. It would be one thing if the cap was tight, but it's clearly not.

Maybe not better (and more expensive) known players like say Hood or Cato June, if nothing else we should've been providing better depth, especially at LB and CB.

So you think it's no good to have 4 guys who can help at that position if we don't have just one more who MIGHT help. And that it's ok for us to only have 2 QB's- 1 good, 1 who CAN'T help? Sounds off balanced to me.
