    Another football league being planned

Bill Hambrecht is a rich old Wall Street guy who has made his money tilting at windmills and disrupting the establishment. “That’s what I do,” he says. “It’s fun.” Almost a decade ago, at 62, he founded WR Hambrecht + Company, whose fundamental premise is that companies don’t need to use Wall Street investment bankers — and pay their outrageous fees — to go public. Hambrecht + Company has since become so threatening to traditional underwriters that they often refuse to be involved in any I.P.O. in which his firm takes part.

And now, at an age when most people are well into retirement, he has decided to tackle the establishment again. This time, though, the establishment isn’t Wall Street. It’s the National Football League. Bill Hambrecht, you see, is starting up a professional football league. So far, he and his partner, Tim Armstrong, a senior executive at Google, have pledged $2 million each. They’ve hired a C.E.O. and a C.O.O., both of whom cut their teeth at the National Basketball Association. They’ve got a name: the United Football League. And they’ve lined up a wealthy, well-known businessman as their first owner: Mark Cuban, the billionaire who owns the N.B.A.’s Dallas Mavericks. Like Hambrecht, Cuban loves nothing more than confronting the status quo.

What's the proverb about the definition of foolishness? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results? There is no market for this. This guy's insane.

They've pledged $2M each? Yeah, that should make them competitive.

So anyone know what is going to be there schtick?

The only reason AFL is somewhat successful is because the game is totally different than the NFL. There is no way the NFL will ever have any competition from another football league.

Seriously, even if there was a league, everyone that was good enough to leave for the NFL, would.

Horrible use of available funds. Go drink some beer if ya wanna waste your money. At least you will have fun doing it.

But like a minor roadside accident, we'll all stop and give it a long look.

It's no $$ out of my pocket. Let them have their 15 minutes and try and beat the odds.

I think they should go the Minor league route, set up the franchises in cities that dont have franchises, and have it like a farm system for the NFL, there are alot of talented guys that get cut, or for whatever reason dont stick in the NFL, but could be surprisingly good to watch plus this would allow some players with charachter issues and injuries to rehab and acome back to the big squad.

I played semi pro football and i play in a very competitive flag football league with a few older Bills like Marlon Kerner, and they all say there needs to be something other than AFL, some guys cant adjust to a small feild and it does no justice for runnning backs,

I think this would be awesome especially in the small towns in the mid country and south were Football is GOD, let these guys play for there contracts, not just a 3 week tryout and your done, Many players trying to make a postion switch or trying football for the first time ( Track Stars, and Basket Ball players) can make the transition and mayb e get a contract at age 25-26, i think it would be awesome, and i would watch it like i watch NFLE

the xfl didn't fail because it was a bad idea, it failed because the play was god awful. If they create rules that allow for a lot of scoring, they'll have a shot.
