We should have made a run at him...
"Intense negotiations between agent Drew Rosenhaus and Jacksonville vice president Paul Vance netted Douglas a five-year deal worth $27.01 million, including a $6 million signing bonus. The base salaries are $665,000 (for 2003), $3.345 million (2004), $5 million (2005), $5 million (2006) and $6 million (2007). There are roster bonuses of $500,000 each in 2006-2007."
Cap hit this year of ~ $2M.
His contract could have easily been renegotiated in '06. It's not unreasonable otherwise. That's the type of stuff I just don't understand. Maybe those guys don't want to play here or something.
But Douglas, Derrius Thompson, Thornton, etc. all signed very reasonable contracts elsewhere and we didn't even make a move for them when they're three of our primary needs. We have plenty of cap room too. Douglas I can understand b/c we have some contracts to redo, but DT and Thornton both would have been very economical and extremely solid.Replace Donahoe with Modrak and fire the entire coaching staff!
Then let's go to Disneyworld!
GO BILLS!!!

To me it looks like a two year deal worth $10 million (6 million signing bonus, 665 thousand this year & 3.4 million next year). They will restructure in 2005 most likely because he won't be worth that much since his production will drop off. If he doesn't renegotiate then Jax will cut him and take the 3.6 cap hit (remaining bonus amount) in 2005.
