SI's top 10 draft surprises of the past decade

    7. Miami passed over Brady Quinn, who had unexpectedly tumbled down in the draft, to take Ted Ginn Jr. out of Ohio State. Dolphins fans slammed the pick and continue to do so now that veteran quarterback Daunte Culpepper appears on his way out of town in favor of 36-year-old Trent Green.

    6. Desperate to improve a defense that surrendered the fourth-most yards in 2005, the Bills took Whitner with the eighth pick. The selection raised eyebrows because most scouts and analysts hadn't projected him going in the top 10.

    5. McGahee tore up his knee in the Fiesta Bowl and could barely walk, let alone play at the time of the draft. But thanks in part to the work of his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, McGahee was taken by the Bills and played well after sitting out his entire rookie season for rehab.

I'm not really sure if Whitner was such a surprise. Mcgahee and Ginn Jr. definitally were though. My jaw dropped after both of those picks.

We needed a safety and Whitner was the next choice after Huff got taken. To be quite frank has it turned out to be a bad pick??

McGahee was one of the stupidest picks ever because we had a RB!!

I agree, especially about McGahee. I don't think there's a Bills fan out there who wanted to part ways with Henry for McGahee. I hope to see Whitner come up with some big plays this year, along with some huge hits.

All three were surprises for me.

There WERE fans that were pretty psyched when McGahee was drafted, but I wasn't one of them.

The McGahee pick irratated the hell out of me. Now, even looking back, I'm still irratated.

Clarett never played a game for Denver and is now in jail.

I remember laughing at McGahee. You had such a good thing with Travis Henry.

I feel like that list is very inaccurate, like some 20 year old made it, bc it only goes back like 5 years. Plus, how surprising was it that Eli went to the Chargers? Just bc he didnt want to go there, Brees was sucking at that point and they needed a QB. He was rated arguably the highest. And how surprising can a pick in the 100's be? (Clarett)

Exactly. I never saw it, but I hear Randy Moss dropping was pretty big. Logan Mankins was a surprise? I didn't even know that was a reach, I don't remember that pickup. How about Aaron Rodgers dropping (the original QB fall)?

mcgahee was a reasonably good pick there. i mean hes a punk ass ***** but hes turned out to be a good starting rb - at least when hes motivated. that may or may not be a terminal problem with him but when he wanted to be he was good. despite our wanting him to bomb in balt, and he might, theres as good a chance he runs hard consistently like he did inconsistently here and ends up elite which would suck

despite henrys impressive and heroic performances, at the time he was still somewhat of a gamble, with injury fumble and jailbird prollems in his recent past. i loved the guy on the field but it was fitty/fitty whether he would boom or bust from there

it coulda been a good situation here both for the team and for henry if he had continued as a successful featured guy, leaving either him or mcgahee as eventual trade bait for some good value

unfortunately if you recall henry mostly stumbled after mcgahee came to the team and basically lost his job. we can find a bunch of reasons why that wasnt henrys fault, some of them very valid, but henry lost 'it' there for a while and couldnt get the job back

at that point he was a risk to anybody and his value plummeted. i was hoping he stuck around here and bided his time, which ironically would have worked out at well at this point, but he wanted out of the situation. i dont blame him really

so a decent pick at that spot but unfortunately for a guy who just didnt fit here regardless. too bad

It wasn't that big of a surprise that the Fins took Ginn. They need a gamebreaker.

The surprise was the passing on Quinn part which I had no problem with

So the whitner pick was a stretch because the "analysts" and "experts" didnt have him in there top 10?? Im glad Marv takes what the team needs and not what the experts think we should take because a player is in there top 10..

It is a draft surprises. Whitner was a top 25 pick. Bunkley, Ngata, Cutler were top 15 picks. Leinart was a top 5 pick. To pass that up was stupid at the time, but has so far paid up, assuming that you're happy with Losman's performance. Still haven't addressed the DT problem, though.
