Cash to Cap Question- Lee Evans

FOr those who are well versed in capanomics- I have a question.

When it comes time to give Lee Evans a new deal, I think it's safe to assume he'll want (and deserve) a contract that's comparable to the extension that Houston WR ANdre Johnson recently signed.

That contract is to pay $60 million over 8 years, with $15 million in guarentees.

Here are Andre Johnson's contract details, courtesy of Fantasy Sports.

3/3/2007: Signed an eight-year, $60 million contract. The deal includes $15 million in guarantees.
    2007: $1 million,
    2008: $2.835 million,
    2009: $5.325 million,
    2010: $5.8 million,
    2011: $6.8 million,
    2012: $7.3 million,
    2013: $7 million, 2014:
    $7.3 million, 2015: Free Agent
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's say for mathematical sakes that's the same contract that Evans commands and during or after this season we extended him.

If that happened, what would be his "cash to cap" hit for 2008 and 2009?

Isnt it the first year of play and then all the bonus/guaranteed money up front?

So it would be 1 mil plus 15 mil bonus, so it would be a $16 mil cap hit for the first year?

Re: Cash to Cap Question- Lee Evans

And then his other years would just be his base pay for the season counting against the cap?

I still cant fathom spending 10% of your salary cap on one player. I understand we'll never be in cap jail with this format.

But you're looking at retaining 1-2 of your own quality free agents and MAYBE one decent FA elsewhere per year.. Tops-- not to mention the cost cutting (cough cough Spikes) moves every year to stay under cash to cap.

        That **** sucks

Lee will want and deserves more than Johnson.

Why you ask? Because he is better than Johnson.

It's either future cap jail or current spending jail. I fail to see the upside to cash to cap.

I agree. He certainly isnt going to command less than Andre Johnson, especially in 1-2 years as the salary cap increases.

I don't think the 'cash to cap' philosophy will last very long...I believe it's a short term financial strategy.

I hope to god your right.

I hope it was a short term philosophy to get rid of Clements and the guys that were old and past their primes.

That **** needs to be scrapped before the end of 2008 or we're in BIG big trouble.
