    Parrish: I’m A Receiver First

When one thinks of Bills wideout Roscoe Parrish, what often comes to mind is his electrifying 82-yard punt return that turned the tide in Buffalo's upset of the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.

And while Parrish is proud of that effort, the diminutive receiver would prefer to be recognized differently.

Not many remember the fact that in that same game Parrish had a pair of catches on the final drive covering 36 yards which helped to set up the game-winning field goal.

    Parrish surprised me

PARRISH SURPRISED ME: In my previous interviews with Roscoe, he's normally pretty reserved and at times is guarded about what he says and doesn't say. That's why I was so surprised to get some animated comments from him. He's always been a self-motivated player, but for perhaps only the second time in the dozens of instances when I've interviewed him there was some emotion in his voice when he talked about being known as a receiver first and foremost and then a special teamer. It's not that he isn't proud of his abilities as a specialist and he values the importance of special teams. I just think he's been told for so long that he can't be consistently productive at wideout because of his size that he wants to further establish himself as just that at the NFL level... a consistently productive receiver to prove the doubters wrong. And more power to him when he does. ---

He's a good punt returner and a good WR in certain spots and situations

I've always liked Parrish, and have always loved his speed. I'd like to see more screens or reverses for him and let his legs do the work.

his receptions in that game ring more impressive to me than the return.. and the return was freakin ridiculous. i still like roscoe as a wr. a lot. cant help it. the detroit game where jp threw that td to him makes me smile too. i like the little guys haha

A lot more 3 and 4 WR sets is only going to help him and Reed. One is going to burn your secondary while other runs right through it. Should be fun to watch!

Out of all the knocks I've seen about him being small, I've never seen him do anything but bounce right up after taking a big hit. Do your thing Parrish, prove all the doubters and haters wrong!

I think the bigger problem with his size is his ability to get separation and make catches in traffic. If you look at his receptions, he's always WIDE open- he's never put in a situation where he has to out-jump or out-muscle a defender for the ball, because he will lose.

The guy's dangerous if you can get him in space but he's useless in a crowd. Also he's limited in YAC ability in a crowd too- I remember seeing him get arm tackled several times.

Don't forget to add Lynch/Wright who can catch and if our OL holds up without the help of our TE's they too can catch.

I really think Roscoe has everything a good NFL receiver needs except size and he could obviously use more bulk. He seems to have good hands, hes just so small that, as others have pointed out, he cant really go up and fight for the ball downfield, which limits his usefulness in the deep passing game. And hes not a pure burner like Santana Moss or Mighty mouse Steve Smith, hes more quick than them IMO but not faster in terms of straightline speed. I still think, if used right, he could catch 50 balls for 800 yards. COULD.

Roscoe Will put up good numbers this year...with a 4 wr set i think its the best situation for him. i see alot of singleback 3 and 4 wr sets and utilizing each Wr's abilitys

I notice they were running alot of WR screens to him in camp.

He's a punt returner, that's it. He wasn't a receiver in college, and he won't be a receiver in the NFL.

Does that mean that his receptions don't count?

Well he wasn't a 1st round pick like Ginn...

Ginn had some receptions in college, though. So...
