Sabres drafting is bad

Ok, now who is a first round pick that the Sabres drafted that is actually on the team? In the 1984 draft, they could have had Brendan Shannahan, or Joe Sakic. But they took Pierre Turgeon. Shame, shame.

From 1987 to 1990, Shanahan had 88 goals/ 214 pts, Sakic 110g/ 273pts,

Turgeon= 118goals, / 315 points

Turgeon was the better player, had the biggest impact. Plus, he was relied on more for carrying the load than these other players.


Also, we then turned around and traded him for Pat LaFontaine, even with the injuries probably the second or third greatest Sabre in team history.

If it were the 1984 draft and we selected Turgeon with that pick, I would agree it would have been a stupid pick.

The top player in 1984 was Mario Lemieux

Shanny went to a NJ team that was horrible and didn't make a dent...Wesley only got noticed after he was traded to Hartford for 3 first round picks.

Boy...that looked like a weak draft. But look at this run:

Now if you want to argue that the Sabres have not drafted well in the first round the past 15 seasons then you might have an argument- but then you need to compare our choices in the first with all the other teams (to be fair)


Looking at he first round picks year by year, not a lot of people became stars, or made the league at all. The NHL draft is much closer to the Baseball draft than the NFL or NBA first round- where everyone makes the roster at least for the first or second seasons.

Like in baseball, you are drafting 18 year old kids whom all but 3-4 will make the opening day roster. If your NHL team is playing your first round pick from that year, generally it's an indication your team really sucks.

Even with the track record for first round draft picks, the Sabres went deep into the playoffs in the late 1990's. Many of those picks were traded as prospects for guys like Dale Hawerchuck ( D. Shannon) Alexi Zhitnik (Phillipe Boucher) and so on.


So look at he entire body of work. Lately, they have done pretty well- Martin Biron, Norennen, Ryan Miller, Dimiri Kalinin,

OK, which one of those has lived up to his potential? Surely not any of those. Not even a glimpse, except from Biron and Mckee.

2 out of 5 isn't bad! The hockey draft is a crap shoot do you know how many times we were ranked like the top 10 for drafting? Hockeys future and the Hockey News had us up there for quite a bit too. Dmitri Kalinin is going to be a good player too. Go Sabres!
