The Penguins might not be getting a new arena, after all.
If a bill critical to funding a new arena is not approved before the Pennsylvania Legislature recesses for the summer, the entire project could be in jeopardy, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Friday.
"The money is there but the Penguins have said that if the bill isn't passed in this session it may delay construction for a year and that might put the deal in jeopardy," Chuck Ardo, spokseman for Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell, said.
Ardo said that Rendell is lobbying state senators to act on the legislation, which would provide $7.5 million a year for 30 years toward arena construction, before leaving for the summer, adding that it would be an "absolute travesty" for the deal to fall through after state and local leaders worked through the winter to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh.
