Roy plans to file for arbitration

Arbitration a thorn in Sabres’ side
Agent says Roy to file this week
By John Vogl NEWS SPORTS REPORTER

The Buffalo Sabres don’t like the arbitration process. They want it changed.

They also may have to go through it again this summer.

The deadline for restricted free agents to file for arbitration is 5 p.m. Thursday, and Sabres center Derek Roy plans to be on the list.

“We haven’t had any discussions yet with the club, so we’ll no doubt be filing for arbitration,” Roy’s agent, Larry Kelly, said Tuesday from his office in Ottawa.

That's just what I was wondering. Nothing on Vanek, nothing on Roy, no report that they talked at all with Zubrus ... just what have they been doing?

And then Stooge Larry complains about arbitration! That's like a student complaining that homework should be allowed to be turned in after the grades are given out.

This club had nobody to blame for their problems, but themselves. Everyday brings another problem and they are all self-inflicted. I really am starting to hate all of the FO's constand whining about he CBA. Just shut up and build a Cup winning team!

The 3 stooges are worse than kids...they never seem to learn their lesson! Why are they not signing these guys before they have a chance to go to arbitration? Did they not learn from the mistakes this year?

Re: Roy plans to file for arbitration

Roy doesn't become a UFA if he files for arbitration, it is still the age of the player.

Just because a player files for arbitration doesn't mean the club doesn't want to deal with negotiations with him. It is a system (sometimes flawed) that allows a player to receive a hearing to determine a fair market value. From the awards last year it could be the players best option. Besides, only like 10-20% (if that) actually make it to the hearing, most of them get worked out before the player's date. Last year there were 68 players that filed and 13 actually made it to the hearing.

This is what the team and Roy will be looking at:

                Age: 24
                Goals: 21
                Assists: 42
                Points: 63

Players in the same area last season and their awards:

Kyle Calder (age at arbitration - 26) - 25-36-61 pts = awarded one year 2.75 million
                Ladislav Nagy (age - 26) - 15-41-56 pts = awarded one year 2.75 mil.
Ryan Malone (age - 26) - 22-22-44 pts = awarded two year 2.75 mil. per.

We are looking at 2.75-3 mil here.

That's way too much money for Roy right now.

The Sabres have to learn to stop letting others set the value for the players because it only goes up. They did that with McKee, Grier, Briere, Drury, Dumont etc and the only reason they paid the price for Briere was because it was for one year. The sad part is that Darcy has said after the price was set that they pretty much knew what that price would be, yet they didn't offer it first. If you KNOW what the price will be and DON'T make the offer first, the player has no idea how committed you are to keeping him! It's just an idiotic way of doing business.

It's not the amount, it's the term. One year, and then what? We found out this year.

Dont bank on it, but to the best of my knowledge, if Roy and Sabres dont agree on a deal before the date, they go to arbitration and his 2007-08 contract number is set. They then cannot negotiate until January 1. After this coming season, he would then become a UFA unless we landed an extension with him during the season (but after January 1st).

I expect Roy to get close to $3 million if they go to arbitration.

Now let me say this... what the ****.. They are obviously not signing anyone in the UFA market, and according to Roy's agent they havent spoken regarding a deal????? I thought we were supposed to work on locking up our "core". Roy should be treated like he was a UFA right NOW-- unless this FO is just full of ****.. again

Once your arbitration eligible, and given your award. Your on a one-year deal and eligible for UFA the next season, right?
